She's About to....... #12

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Good Morning! Overcast to cloudy here today... Never heard of eggs in plants, I put a banana peel in new passion vine pots, not sure it helps but I read it somewhere a long time ago and I just always do it. Mom used to pour left over cold coffee on houseplants.. not sure what that does either.. I know I'm NOT ready to bring stuff in, but I know that day isn't far away. I hope it doesn't freeze until Nov.
Aw Joyce, 2 yr b-days are such fun... I've used Fusion(sp?) paint on those big tubs, it works pretty good, I painted a red one white and after 8 years, it's still doing pretty good. DD#2 had a coconut b-day party for her BF last night.. it was fun and I'm tired today, she lives a couple hours away so it was a late night. She had everything inside and out decorated for the party and the weather cooperated. I see Maya unfurled the first bloom of the flush she's working on so once it colors up, I'll snap a pic.. need to check them all for water today, we got about a wheel barrow full of rain yesterday, the hosta beds sure liked it. I'm off to do a couple rounds out there and get some dirt under my nails!

MEM blooming under the shade structure. Everything is eaten by bugs and looking rather sad in general. Hasn't been a bad August compared to the last 2 summers. I only used the air conditioner for a total of 4 hours this summer.

Pretty blooms! I just pluck the bad leaves lol. MEM just is always in bloom or about to : ) Just finished feeding some got 10-52-8 rest got 20-20-20- everyone got sprayed with the "recipe".

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Photo title “Is she ever going to!” seems I’ve been watching her forever.

AuntB, looks like a great time was had by all.

Mary, MEM is beautiful. You must have gotten use to the heat. My ac has been on non stop since June.

Nice party AuntB. Donna I think toninght is the night!!!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Same here on the air conditioning, Donna.. That bloom just HAS to open tonight! Mary your MEM IS beautiful, munched on leaves and all. One thing I've noticed is the sphinx moths have not made an appearance yet... of course I haven't seen any tomato worms on the brugs this year, so I'm wondering if I just haven't had enough blooms at one time to "call" the flyers in... Okay I took the tape measure out... Versi's highest tip is over 9 ft, Maya, PBeauty, and the PP Brug are all right at 8 ft... (as near as I could tell out there by myself trying to be accurate) So they will all JUST fit in the basement height-wise, probably a trimming in store for Versi... I need to get out on the forum and see everyones bloom pics, they are all so lovely. Donna, act disinterested when you walk past that bloom, might help.. ;)

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Tonight is the night, I just know it. I'm ignoring her for the rest of the day.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Hi Kim, you're feeding and spraying, I found some 20-30-20 this year, the bloomers are getting that. I really want to try Ken's recipe, but just haven't gotten organized enough to shop for ingredients.. that's on my list of things to do once it's yucky outside, so I can use it on my seedlings this winter. I hear it smells, is it so bad I won't want to use it inside?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

That's they way to induce her, Donna... she'll do it JUST to get your attention back.

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Hey AuntB1 The smell is not so bad to me I also added orange oil. And I think it is the best for winter since we water less.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I don't feed in winter, but I do want to mix some once get some seeds growing. I like it that is all natural. Are people using it exclusively? Or with 20-20-20 like you are? I'm about out of 20-20-20, again, it's almost time to start weening brugs off fertilizer, but I will have to buy some more this season. I've decided to keep feeding the hibiscus full strength and ween them once they are settled in the basement. They keep most of their leaves and will bloom off and on all winter if I can keep it around 60 down there. The smaller ones are going behind my couch in front of south windows, I so love seeing the color when it's all brown, gray or white outside. Should be an interesting Fall, getting everything in the most compatible place/environment I can provide, since I really doubled my brugs and hibs this year. (Crazy Plant Lady, I guess lol) One thing I do in the basement is try to keep the pots up off the cold cement floor, I think that helps a lot. I have a couple pallets for the hibs..(may need to add another one this year) and I have cinder blocks and long 2X12's I use to keep things up. I also have one of those green metal 3 part plants stands, (one long 3-tier piece and 2 curved 3-tier end pieces) I put the smaller pots.
I think I have buds on my rick-rack cactus Louise! There are these fuzzy things coming out of the end of one, so I'm hoping they are buds..they are the first I've seen on it in the 3 or 4 years I've had it. I have a piece I've been trying to root for you, but I'm not too hopeful, but I'll bring a fresh piece to the round-up and let you root it. We need to organize what we're bringing each other Louise, I've got that snail vine with your name on it, and I know I want to share some brugs with you, but seems like have more stuff you wanted. I really need some help growing night blooming cactus, mine look pathetic. I keep them on the east end of the front porch, (it's roofed) they get a.m. sun, but they just aren't pretty green like Clemens... the only thing I might be doing wrong is the soil... my aunt keeps her's in regular ground dirt.. do they like something that drains better, should I use a potting mix instead?? She gets the family heirloom christmas cactus to bloom like crazy so I thought the dirt would be fine... (gosh, I'm such a blabber mouth today!)

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

I don't feed in winter just mist with the recipe. I"m not sure if others use 20-20-20.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

So, Kim is the recipe more for insects and disease or food? Or all? (it's been a while since I've seen the ingredients)

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Bonnie take a pic of your cactus buds! I keep all my epis in a mix of orchid mix, potting soil and cactus mix. They do like well draining soil. I know alot of people just put them in cactus mix. I need to drill more drain holes in my hanging pots though, they tend to hold the moisture. My night blooming jasmine is covered in buds. Amazing growth on that plant. I bought it as a 2 inch plant in the spring and it is four feet tall now. Do you want cuttings at the RU? I will send you a list of stuff I have and you can tell me if you want some. I do have a rooted Epi hawaiian bells for you.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Oh, great Louise, now I remember the Hawaiian Bells! I should repot mine epi's now, but I will wait until next spring, I think they'll do better then. And they've been in that dirt for this many years.. Thanks, I'd love to try rooting some Jasmine.. I have 2, a white, (star jasmine, maybe?) and a small yellow one.. I could clip a couple starts of them for you, too. I really don't have a lot to bring for the ru swap, (I always say that, then the car is full when we leave, lol)

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Now, it doesn't really look like buds, but I don't remember new growth looking hairy and the shape isn't right... whadda you think?

AuntB I think all three I need to find the thread. Nice pic Clemen! Donna all you need is a flashlight : ) It worked Becky!! I like latana and bflies! Very pretty.

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Yay Becky you did it, great shot.
Yes need a working flashlight, unfortunately DGD loves to play with them and all are dead, she tends to leave them under the couch and this time they were on. Need to put on list, get batteries before next power out! I’ll get a good look in the am, always up before first light.

Midwest City, OK(Zone 7b)

Beck, you're posting picture, ah'll right! Way to go. But, I need to talk to you about how long it takes to download, in Arlington, okay, sweetie? I cannot wait. And I think we will be having gumbo. (((:))).

Donna, this thread started back at #1 with "She's about to" that Kimarj posted and it took forever and ever for that bud to bloom. Poor Kim was trying to work, but we were yelling for pictures. But when it did, oh, my goodness! We had hot winds blowing and everything else going on, but that one bloom is where we all became friends and hotties. And yes, we tried the Heimleich and going through natural child birth, push, push, push! You will have a beautiful bloom, I predict in 3 days, like I know anything, Tee hee. Congratulations! And please, enjoy it and share. We want to see, no pressure at all, right? (Said lovingly).

For the MGs and the brug-growing people, I have a big question. I cannot find the high ferilizer you are finding. I cannot get over 20-20-20. And my brugs do not like it!! They turn yellow everytime I feed them this. I do have them in strongly composted highly rich soil already, DH's doing. I cannot start a flower bed without putting his brand of compost in it that he uses on his veggies. I have not tested it, but am getting ready to do that., just to find out what I am dealing with. I am going to try the recipe as foliar (sp?) spray, but any time I give them any fertilizer they turn yellow.

Of course, two weeks of 103-106 temps did not help either. I lost three brugs from dear Bonnie from the heat. So any suggestions would be appreciated. I think I need to test the soil I am working with and come back a little bit more knowledgable. So that is my next step.

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Ok now I get it : ) that visual was to funeee!

Midwest City, OK(Zone 7b)

Clemen and Cat, those are beautiful!

But how old are those plants that are giving you those beautiful blooms? For all of us with "nekkid babys" and those of us that fall in the category of "brug-challenged?" ME!!!

I swear, my first psycho eval ever, is going to be because of brugs. I have never worried about a plant, and bought so much and babied it so much, and you seem to do it so easily. DH is asking me if I'm sure I have the same plants, when I show him your pictures. "Well, yours don't look like that," I think if I ever got one bloom, he will be planting them everywhere. He loves your pics, then he looks at mine, and kind of shakes his head. We see very few brugs or daturas around here in people's yards. And again, actually, we see manicured lawns and No Flowers in our neighborhood.

One elderly couple a block down put out all kinds of silk and plastic flowers in their totally manicured yard. I may just wait until next year, and replace their fake flowers with real ones. We'll see. But I'm thinking about it. :) Peg

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Peg one nose full of that lovely scent and it's all worth it! The lady next to me has plastic flowers too..cracks me up so I give her all kinds of starts ; }
