Love that Fennel

Frankfort, KY(Zone 6a)

This is my first harvest and boy does it smell like anise or liquorice to me.
It doesn't look like the ones I buy at the supper market but it smell the same.
Was very surprised at the long tap root, 17" long before it broke.

Well done you, it probably is the same as you buy in the store, but, will taste much better, you are looking at the whole plant, what we normally buy is just the edible part or the part the store thinks we like best, so now you know just what real good home grown veg looks like, lets hope you go on to try some other stuff to fill your plates and freezer because you know what was in your soil and what has been sprayed on the food you eat, and hopefully it was only water you had to use. enjoy and be proud. Good luck. WeeNel.

I think the more common kind you see in gardens, and in the grocery, is Bronze Fennel, which is a darker, grayer green with a bronze-ish tint. Not sure if the flavor and smell are the same. I have the bronze kind in my yard, but it hasn't gotten nearly that big! Well, the caterpillars keep it whittled down.

We have eaten 2 and I have 9 more growing.
Flowers have formed on 2 and I will let them go to seed, just for fun.
I have harvested seed from my Dill and Coriander.
Just having lots of Fun this year ^_^
