Having trouble growing grass and perennials

Pineville, WV

I live in southern WV in zone 6 and I am having a terrible time getting my yard established. We have thick, yellow clay soil and we get full sun all day! We have probably spent in the neighborhood of $3000.00 on grass seed and fertilizer with minimal results. We have just as many bare spots as we did last year. To put it bluntly it looks like crap! I am wanting to reseed this fall but I am sick of taking all day (our yard is verybig) to seed, fertilize and water with such unfavorable results. Also about 50% of the perennials I have planted this year are turning yellow near the bottom and the leaves are falling off. I think its a bug of some sort, because of the bite marks on the leaves, but I have yet to find any type of bug. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I cannot post pics right now as my camera is being repaired. Please help I am desperate!

Heavy clay soil can be really tough to work with. You might consider building berms or doing raised beds for your garden areas, or else do some major soil amendments. The yellowing leaves that are falling off sounds like too much water, with heavy clay that's often hard to avoid. You might have bugs too, but I suspect you have a watering issue on top of it. And for the grass, you may need to do some amendments to loosen up the soil and then try seeding your grass again, I think it'll do better too if it's not sitting in all that clay.
