Any Ideas?

Caledonia, OH(Zone 5a)

Hello,
I was just wondering if anyone knew any fun little projects I could do this winter. It always sneaks up on me and I don't plan anything, and I end up pretty bored a lot of the time. The more I think about it I have done all of the one I thought of like the avocado pit, the sweet potato, little dish gardens, starting different seeds, and things like that. I do have one idea, I was going to try some diferent terrariums. I read about using a tabasco bottle. http://www.stormthecastle.com/terrarium/tabasco-bottle-terrarium.htm. so any Ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Laurie

If you have access to some "country" type areas, one thing I enjoy doing in late fall/early winter is going on long walks to collect all sorts of "weeds" to bring home and dry. There are many things that work real well such as cattails, milk weed flowers, goldenrod, etc. I then make dried arrangements out of them. I buy inexpensive vases, fancy tin ones such as the brightly painted little watering cans, etc., to put them in and use them as gifts. If you know the color schemes of friends and relatives homes, it's not hard to make an arrangement that coordinates nicely with them. Since they can't be dusted, I make new arrangement every year and just throw the old ones away. It's enjoyable, inexpensive, and gives me some fresh air and exercise while enjoying nature.

Wow thats a great one thanks I will try that. And the type of projects are well like different crafts to keep me busy like, well this might sound dumb but I really enjoy the little beads you iron it sound childish but I find it fun and I was looking for something a bit more Challenging I mean I think plant project would be put on hold for awhile. but I hope this helps.

I'm doing Jar swap, 3B Houses and Cute Critters (This one is still open) right now. If you want to make stuff for the swaps it will certainly give you something to do. What time is it there 4am? I hope you're getting up and not still up.

Caledonia, OH(Zone 5a)

yep its 4am and nope i haven't been to bed yet. I'm a night owl. and I will really think about this thanks again.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

It's only 1 here, but I have to get up about 7:30am. I'm a night owl by nature, forced into a day job. I'm just finishing a beer before I go to bed.

Wow! Y'all are some hard core night owls! DH and I make a weird couple--he's a night owl and I'm a died-in-the-wool morning person (I mean like getting up between 3:30 and 4:30 a.m., LOL). Lauri19, have you looked into making jewelry? PinkysPlants on here makes some nice jewelry and is using it to trade for plants. I'm sure you could buy a book or even find some beginner instructions online. I used to make jewelry quite a few years back but my first love it going out into the woods and fields for wildlife photography (another possibility for you). It's fun and all that walking gets me much needed exercise! Can you tell I'm an outside person, LOL!

zhinu that sounds like great way to unwind. I am not quite old enough to drink just two more years. Naturelover, I'm no morning person ether. Jewelry is a great one thanks. I am gonna be busy. LOL!

Beer is good relaxant. Also a minor pain killer, the more hops the better. Though I don't like the taste of hops. I haven't been getting beer much recently, we're tight on money, but that was the last one from a six pack we got earlier in the week. I wish I had one now.

My boyfriend and I have been practicing saving money. and smart shopping it is harder than I thought. But I'm hoping that I get into college and be come a veterinarian technician.

It is tough, but it gets easier the more you do it. When you realize you can do without, you start seeing other things that you can do without.

I see so do you think we are trying too hard. Oh and could you explain the Jar swap. Do I have to be a subscriber to do this, if not please tell me more like times if there are any dates, rules anything I would need to know. What is the cute critters all about. I am sorry to ask so much but i really want to know.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

You do have to be a subscriber, but the cost to subscribe is really minimal $5 for 2 months and $20 for a year, best $20 I ever spent, got my mom hooked too and just bought a gift subscription for my MIL.

There are several swaps and they start new ones regularly. I'm signed up for four right now. 3Bs house, Jar swap, Cute Critters and bird feeder. The basics are that you make or buy an item, get a name to send it to, someone else gets your name and sends you one.

3Bs - is closed, I've already sent mine off, I'll post pictures as soon as my buddy gets it.

Quoting:
Bats, Birds and Butterfly House

I am opening it today August 4, and will take names until August 18, then posts your buddy name and address on the August 19. All houses should be mailed out by August 25.

It does not have to be home made, it can be bought. If you want to make a homemade one it can be made out of ANYTHING,( old cowyboots, cowboy hats, cans, gourds, you name it.) If a bird can get in it, it's a house, but bat houses and butterfly houses are a special type of house. I posted some links, that tell about bat and butterfly houses. Pictures alone do not qualify, but if you want to decorate with pictures that will work.

Anything goes so long as there is either Bat, Bird or Butterfly with a House, inside decoration or outside decoration. Here are some links to give you some ideas for your houses.

Jar swap - also closed, almost finished with mine.

Quoting:
This swap is all about re-purposing those glass jars you usually throw away.
Lets make something else out of them, and send them to each other.

Some ideas for used jars would be: Pickle Jars, Mayo Jars, Baby food Jars, Any kind of jar that once held food.

Some ideas for repurposing them would be: Trinket jars, Candle jars, Vases, Gifts in a jar.

Let your imagination go wild. Decorate them anyway you like. Let's share ideas here about what mediums to use for decorations. You can even fill them with something if you like.

I’ll take names until August 15th, and all swaps should be mailed out by September 5th.
If that isn’t enough time for some of you, or if you have an unforeseen problem with mailing your swap by then, your buddy would appreciate a d-mail to let them know.

Now, open your fridges, look for a glass jar holding food… and eat it up really quick.
