Late Summer Blooms, Show Yours!

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Well...when I took the photo I just snapped it without really looking, so I didn't even know the Preying Mantis was there. I only saw it in the photo when I downloaded it last night. By this morning the P. M. was no longer to be found on that plant. I haven't found any sulfur cats or eggs yet this year. Maybe soon!

I remember a song from my childhood about a praying mantis which somehow made me think it was cute....little did I know it is such a predator...Hummingbirds!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I still think they are facinating, I don't kill them, just relocate them. I had a bunch of babies hatch out last year near my parsley! I grow it for the Blk Swallowtails so they were moved!

How can we "not" have a good day? * )) Just beautiful!

I could wander into your backyard garden photo and get lost...

Podster, thanks, there are a lot of weeds in there,( 4-5 ft johnson grass). That's the reason for no close-up pictures.
The Knock-out roses are starting to bloom again.

Weeds are good when they are pretty!

And when they are host for butterfly larvae!

I usually take closeups so as not to see the unsightly. I always seem to have plastic pot,dog toy, hose or ugly weed otherwise.

Isn't he cute! Poor baby was probably searching for some water since it has been so dry here all summer.

We have lots of toads that hang around the flower gardens that get the most water.

Gossh, you fooled me, I thought he was ceramic. LOL!
I have one brug color unknown, but my neighbor just game 100 seeds to a beautiful white with dark purple. Love the pink.

Nice male Luna moth T.J., please add it to the bugfiles. I love looking at them; a pitty they don't live long. They don't have mouth parts, only live to mate and lay eggs.

Your Celosia is stunning! Love it.

Susie2 ~ I love the POB blooms ~ they are so unique. Your Cereus planted in ground is an excellent idea. I wouldn't be able to leave it in ground overwinter but think I will try it for the summer next year.

Credit for the Celosia must be given to Corgimom... Libby over on the MidSouth forum. She kindly shared. I love the purple foliage as well as the blooms. Your planting turned out well Bronc! If anyone needs some seed, dmail me. The warning that will go with it is it will reseed freely. Pretty annual though.

Texas_Trixie ~ very pretty blooms! Your flower bed looks like it belongs in a park.

I love everyones Brug blooms. I have a love/hate relationship with them. I love the blooms and hate that they wait till fall to really deliver the blooms!

Trouble ~ the gold Verbena is pretty and unusual. Usually it is the Lantana that blooms like that in late summer.

I am so jealous of the Night blooming Cerus!! I have the plant and have had it before with none, zip, nada, zero blooms!!! What is your conditions? Shade, some sun, water?

Brazoria, TX(Zone 9b)

Sheila, I really don't do anything to my cereus. I had it in the greenhouse for one year and only got 6 blooms in one year. Had to wait another year fir it to start blooming again. Placed it outside this past spring and it has bloomed several times for me with flushes at about every 2 months. Right now it 5 bloomed 2 nights ago and still have about 15 small ones to come out in full bloom. I don't make an effort to do anything. I just ignore it and prop it up when it gets out of hand. I really need to place a better structure for it to climb on but waiting til after November. Don't water it, only overspray from watering other plants nearby. We have been in such a drought here that it hardly gets any rain at all. Full sunlight and it is hottttt.
Podster, the POB is only about 4 ft tall and still growing. I think it likes its home. I have another one in another area and hasn't grown hardly at all. I need to move it. Another one is in a pot and doesn't want to bloom. Need to move it to a sunny location. I have sveral pink ones that are about 30 inches in pots and needing to find a location for them also.
Just waiting til after IKE passes.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Bless you ~ I hope Ike is just a whisper... The Cereus seems to love neglect. Mine receives no water and then when we do get a rain, it pops with blooms.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I have it root bound (which I remember it likes), in sun, but DH waters it when he waters the deck plants; so I will tell him no water and see if that is what it needs to bloom. Thanks
