What is this and can it grow in Zone 9b

Palo Alto, CA

I think this is a Salix integra ‘Hakuro-nishiki'. 1) Can you tell me if that's right; 2) Can you tell me if I can plant this Zone 5 plant in a Zone 9b; and 3) Is this a bush trained into a tree?

Your help would be so appreciated. :-)

It is 'Hakuro Nishiki', I found that exact picture in Plant Files under that plant (next time if it's someone else's picture, it's best to post a link to the picture rather than reposting someone's copyrighted photo). It does fine here, although I think you'd have to put in some effort on pruning/training to get it to look that shape, if you look at the other pictures of it in Plant Files it generally doesn't have that shape. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/205668/

Also as you think about other plants--where you are, your summers are cool enough that you don't have to worry as much about plants that might not like being in zone 9--the people in TX and FL or farther inland in CA where it gets super hot need to worry about that, but as close to the bay & coast as you are summer heat shouldn't be a problem for any of your plants. Only things you'll have trouble with are things like lilacs and peonies that need a certain number of hours of winter chill to bloom.

I have a lovely Weeping Willow been growing for about 10 years and it is easy to grow, IF you buy one, have a good look at the top of the trunk as in UK, most of the ones the size your picture shows, are grafted onto different root stock to keep the heads small, if it is grafted, you will need to give it some support for a few years till the root system take a good hold to support the heavy top. you will then have to train it by pruning each spring to the size and shape you want, if you walk under the umbrella dome, you will see right away the branches you need to cut and the ones to save, but dont cut too close to the graft if this is the type you have. Good Luck. WeeNel.
