I purchased 3 Hydangea shrubs last spring which they bloom very nicely. However this year they never bloom the foliage is big and beautiful but no blooms. Are you suppose to fertizle with anything special? Did they bloom in the spring or summer? Do you have any ideas on what I can do or why there was no flowers I live in Kansas Zone 5. Thanks
Hydangea blooms
Some Hydrangea bloom on old wood, which could have been winter damaged if they were not protected. Many of the newer cultivars bloom on new wood.Do you know the name of yours?
Lynn
Maybe not ready to flower yet, can you remember what time of year they flowered last year, I have several of these plants and some are in full bloom now, some are only about ready to fill out the flowering buds, and my wall / climbing one has flowered it's head off all spring and will being dead headed in the morning, As Lynn said, if you have a label get the name or type of plant you have and maybe we can help you further,
The Hydrangea likes a good bit of sun, plenty of water in the hot weather and yes, I feed mine early spring with some organic matter, watch what type of feed you use or you can change the soil alkaline and will result in the flowers changing colour too, your zone is about the same temps as mine, so they may still flower this year, if not, give it a good mulch or organic stuff and this might protect the roots and keep them warm over the winter, also in my temp, I would not prune them till I see new buds forming early spring, the old foliage will also offer the stems some cold protection, good luck.
