How do you prune a lipstick (aeschynanthus) plant? Mine won't bloom.
Prune a lipstick plant
Has it ever bloomed? Is it otherwise healthy? Have you looked up the light requirements? Often insufficient light will cause a plant to be vegetative without blooming. If it's never bloomed, and it's full-sized, pruning alone is very unlikely to cause it to bloom.
The plants do best in a soil made of 3 parts fibrous peat and 1 part dried moss, make this up yourself or buy ready made from garden store, the plant is best grown as either a climber or hanging(trailing from a basket, it needs misting every few days in hot weather as they prefere a humid atmosphere, and shade from really hot sun, it only needs a liquid feed occasionally during the summer growing season and in the rest or winter months only give enough water to keep the plant alive, dont let the plant sit in wet soil, allow the excess water to drain away if it is in a pot. It needs re-potting every 3/4 years in early spring just before it really starts to grow again. I am not sure of your zone temp, but here in UK, I can only grow this as an indoor plant and I am about zone 5or6, our temp fluctuates from day to day, so it is hard to be more accurate, sorry about that.
As for your plant, it can only be the growing conditions that are affecting your plant, is it in a pot, outdoors or inside, give it a liquid feed at one of the watering's to see if this will help, when you ask about pruning the plant, if it is hanging down too far, just nip off the growing tips and this will help the plant to form more stems etc, also how old is your plant, maybe it is still too young/small to flower, what type of soil is it in, please try to give us more info so we can help you more, these are normally easy plants to grow once they are happy in the right spot, mine almost thrives on neglect to be fair, good luck.
