Has anyone used gelatin as a fertilizer?

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I was looking at a really old box of gelatin that I have and it has a recipe for 10-0-0 plant food on the side. Has anyone used this and what would you use it for?

the first number is nitrogen- to green plants up.

I know that, I was just wondering if the gelatin works and if anyone has tried it.

Black Creek, WI

never heard of that, If you would'nt mind what is the recipie (can it even be posted) I wouldnt mind trying it on my corn.

I have heard of it, but I haven't tried it. I don't see why it shouldn't work, though. What is the recipe?

Sorry if I insulted you. I can't imagine that using one pack of gelatine would make a lot of difference one way or the other. It won't hurt or help. There's not enough there. There are fertilizers out there for purchase. Not one person in a half million would buy gelatine for plant food.

noQgarderner - Here is a link someone posted on the thread I put in the wrong spot. http://www.plantea.com/gelatin-plants.htm

dp72 - I already had the gelatin and I don't have money for fertilizer.

Are you in a situation where you can compost? Compost is basically free and makes wonderful fertilizer. Not as strong as the stuff we can buy but the price is right. And where you are, you could make a compost heap right on the ground (I can't as fireants love to inhabit mine so I have it raised). If you don't know how to compost, there are lot's of folks on DG who can get you started.

I might be able to get a compost bin next month, though I'm still not sure where I'll put it.

When I lived in Arkansas many years ago, my neighbor across the street used her old worn out trash cans. They seemed to work just fine and the didn't take up a lot of space.

I had that idea, but since I should be able to get a real one next month.
