I got some daisies from my grandmother, got them transplanted about a week ago. They seem to be doing fine. My question is now that they are transplanted, when should I cut them back for winter? Should I leave them with leaves for longer so they will get established or should I cut them back so there isn't any more stress on the roots?
Transplanted daisies
If I transplanted daisies this late in the year, if they look stressed at all, I'd cut off any flowers and cut the leaves back by half, and keep them well watered. That way the plant will still have some green to absorb sun, not have so much plant matter to support, and have more energy for putting down new roots. However, if they are real perky, I would only cut off the flowers and keep it well watered.
Thanks! So I should cut them all the way back around the first frost?
Yup--I'm sure after the first killing frost, there won't be anything left to save for this year.
You could tidy them up a bit after killing frost, but I would not scalp them down. Leaving some old pieces seems to help them to make it through the winter. Then, in the early spring, just clip them all the way back.
