mushroom kits?

Beverly Hills, CA

has anyone tried that?

They usually cost over $30, can they actually produce that much mushrooms if i just spend the same amount of money buying them from supermarkets?

and are they easy to take care of?

I tried one like this a couple of years ago and it was a moderate success.

I purchased it as a science experiment for my sons 5th grade class for something to do in the winter. While we didn't get pounds and pounds of mushrooms there were certainly enough for a couple of meals. I've seen them in full "bloom" at the mushroom stall at the local farmers market and those look to be more prolific than mine was, but then they are grown by folks that really know their business. One of the problems I had was keeping it moist enough and remembering to mist it daily (I forget to water my house plants too :-) I'm sure if I had followed the instructions that came with it properly the yield would have been better.
Are they cost effective? Well......... If you were to purchase a mushroom kit of an exotic mushroom that would normally sell for a lot more $$ than regular brown or white and you were diligent about caring for it, Maybe! What is interesting about the kits is that they do last for a long time until all of the spores have been used up. They are not a harvest once and discard thing.

I bought one for my son last year for Christmas. I got it from these folks: http://www.mushroomadventures.com/kits.html

I got the portabella kit. He loved it. He told me that he got three flushes altogether -- two very large ones, and a third one that was moderate. They are easy to take care of and come with complete instructions.

You can also get yourself a fresh, hardwood log, drill holes in it, and insert dowel spawn. The spawn is very cheap. http://www.mushroomadventures.com/dowel.html

There is a place that sells morel mushroom kits. Setting that up is more work than a boxed kit -- however, when you consider the cost of morels . . . if you like them it might be worth a try. http://www.gmushrooms.com/Morel/index.htm
