East Texas Fall RU, Saturday October 11th 2008 Pt 2

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

sure I'll take it off your hands LOL

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Good deal!!.. I TY and Lyle TY!! Maybe now I will have an excuse to clean out that bed...LOL.. It has a sassafras taller than me in there!! AND it DOESN'T belong!!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

oh wait a sec I'm only taking the rose off you hands not the sassafras I have plenty of those lil buggers coming up all over the place
but maybe you should offer it as a trade to get rid of it too LOL

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Phyllis did you notice I have a hardy old climbing rose on my list that is a prolific climber and bloomer? It's NOID, but the flowers are a lovely deep red, if you want it

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

LOL.. we want Phyllis to have these bad boys!!..LOL I HATE stickers!! Noooooooo I wasn't offering you the sassafras..LOL I know you have them too.. I was telling off on myself, for being a BAD gardener!! I doubt one that big would ever make it anyway!!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Karen I guess I really didn't' pay attention so I didn't see it and if no one else wants it sure

B B Beck I was teasin too ...ya know the roots can go deep on those suckers and new trees come up from the roots as they spread along under ground like bamboo LOL
one that big would make it as it would have the lil "hairy" roots on it where as the lil guys only have the main root they come off of to get them going..(speaking form experience in the last year of diggin some up for trades )

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Well... I have dug a few too.. and I always get a lil fine root..like one maybe..
OK.. you advertise... BIG Sassafras for trade..LOL otherwise it's going in my burn pile!!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

burn pile?? you could take the roots wash them off good and cut them into pieces and boil them....stain it off then boil again ...like 3 times then pour it into jugs and take it to the A RU and offer them sassafras tea I know there are some there that drink it.....I did that the first RU I ever went to LOL

OK people y'all read it right there Becky has a sassafras tree for trade!!! otherwise she burns it...help save a tree :-)

Does anone have Datura stramonium var. tatula seeds for trade? It is supposed to be one of the smallest daturas to grow?
Linda Kay

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Phyllis... I have never had the tea in my live... you stain it huh??...LOLOL.. I know you mean strain.... how much say will a piece 5"long make.. I might have to try it.. and see??

Linda Kay... I'll go check.. I have lots of seeds I traded when I joined Daves.. and since I am mostly an instant gratification girl...(rather plop the plant in the ground!).... I'll bring you whatever I have that you are wanting

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

becky, that sound good. From what i understand, you can't take cuttings from the daturas, you have to start over every year with new seeds?
Or is it different here in Texas, will they grow year round here?
Linda Kay

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Linda Kay I'm not sure about the smaller size, but I have 6 white Datura's that are strong and blooming great if you want them. I also have 2 of the white with purple edging that are good strong plants for give away, as well as seeds for those.

I think Datura tea was what the Indians made for a painkiller? I may be wrong, but I think it has some painkiller qualities if made into tea also............

okay Phyllis, I thought you were trying to dope us all up with Datura tea ☺

I found this recipe called "Quarreling sassafras Recipe" ....to cute?1 root of sassafras?1 quart water??Take 1 root of sassafras and boil in 1 quart of water for 20-30 minutes. Put in a bottle and when your hubby comes home to quarrel, fill your mouth full and hold until he goes away. Granny said it was a "sure cure."

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

ROFLMAO no Karen we are talking Sassafras tea LOl
it is what root beer used to be made from LOL

Becky it all depends on how much water you boil it in and how much you use to dilute it per strength

I boiled the pieces I had then strained it using a coffee filter then boiled it agian and repeated it like 3 times as it is suppose to have an oil that is not good for you in large amounts...but the amount you would have to take in to have the effect I'm not sure of
but from people I have talked to they drank it all teh time as kids and are still fine never had any problems

http://www.familymedicinenews.org/archives/1999/2247(FM).html

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Lynea.. then I need to make lots of that stuff!!..LOL

My Momma drank it alot.. as all the oldtimers around here did...hmmm..I have to at least try it.. since I love the regular tea.. do you put sugar in it like regular tea??

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

it is up to you and your tastes as to sugar o r not

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Karen, I would love the white and purple datura. I only have the one double yellow. Do they come back next year, or do have to save the seeds? Or can I take cuttings like from the brugs? Sorry for so many questions, just this is all new to me this year.
Linda Kay

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Linda Kay the Daturas and the Brugs will come back without cuttings...On the Daturas, they are prolific reproducers in our areas, so you really don't need to save the seeds. HTH, Karen ☺

(Maggi) Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

"I think Datura tea was what the Indians made for a painkiller? I may be wrong, but I think it has some painkiller qualities if made into tea also..."

Uh, let's not be too quick to talk about making tea from Datura here.

"Most parts of the plants contain atropine, scopolamine, and hyoscyamine. Datura has a long history of use both in S. America and Europe and is known for causing delirious states and poisonings in uninformed users."

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh Maggi, you're right, I shouldn't have mentioned that but was just thinking out loud, I would NEVER suggest someone actually make it and drink it....

(Maggi) Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Aw Karen, I know you wouldn't!

The kids in East Texas are sometimes moved to take themselves out of the gene pool by smoking Jimson Weed AKA Datura stramonium

And, as Ken is fond of saying, while ingesting Brugmansia could give one 'visions', overdoses are ALWAYS fatal.

I lost one Call duck to ingestion of Brugmansia root, the flock memory has made sure it has never happened again, even though the incident was generations ago.

There is always some sad report each year of kids dying of datura poisoning. It always good to remember that too, if you happen to see any teenagers hanging out and wouldn't plant any close to the road were someone could drive by and grab plant or seeds.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Lordy, I had no idea...I should have suspected though, some kids will try anything to get a high. How sad and awful.............

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I have heard the indians used it for thier vision quest. Just never knew how it was used?

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Linda Kay got you down for the white and purple Daturas ☺

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Thats a shame about the kids!! I don't have that problem... them maybe walking by since we are 1/4 mile off the road..lol I do have deer, coons and armidillos.. and the coons and armidillos could eat all they want!!

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

I have heard lots of tales about people having to move their daturas and brugs into their back yards, because of teens stealing the flowers. They can be VERY dangerous.

My coop group also had a discussion about the newest high from some kind of salvia. Wish I could remember which one. There's talk of banning it in some states. (Salvia!) I thought it was very strange, but when I asked my son about it, he knew of kids who were trying it.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

I was just sitting here thinking from reading everything and ya know it is really sad sad sad that people go to these extremes just to get a buzz., envision things and the what not .....they just don't realize just how much their own mind can do on it's own without the aide of "drugs"
what happened to imagination...getting high on life itself.....going outside and having a good time playin in the mud so to speak LOL
I'll gladly admit I can get just as wild and crazy having a good time or be just as quiet and relaxed without any help from drugs or drinking....Life is way to short and our bodies change with age on it's own without doing stupid stuff like that. LOL

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Amen Sis.. you said it well!!

Granbury, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey Tanarae! You are coming to the East Texas RU? I don't know where your trade list is, but I'd love to have some huge pink hibiscus seeds! Please look at my list too to see what you might like to have

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Is this the current thread, or is there a more recent one?
I'm just asking because it looks like there hasn't been a post for about 8 days... I'm really trying to keep up.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

this is the most recent one for the ETRU yes

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Alrighty then... may I make an annoucement?

October is "National Diabetes Month", and how coincidental is it that our RU is scheduled right in the middle of that month. I'm sure we all have a friend or family member who has or has been touched by someone with diabetes.

I would like to present to all the participants in the ETRU an opportunity to donate toward the "National Diabetes Foundation" at the RU... all funds collected will be promptly forwarded to them in whom ever name you wish to attach to it.

We will have small tokens of your support to pin to your clothing saying that you donated to this most worthy cause.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

You sure may make the announcement BJ I think it would be a very worthy cause.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you Phillys... and may I also post this link to a video of a young lady who is currently battling this terrible disease... she's the granddaughter of one of our dear Dave Garden members... a very brave young lady indeed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-X67Z4740o

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

oh yes share the link it is a touching video

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

BJ
I think we need to make the donation in the name of Daves Garden members?
Just my thought
Linda Kay

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, it will be from "DG members".... but you can dedicate your donation in the name of a diabetes victim if you choose to.... but it will be from DG members.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

bj... I think this is a wonderful idea.. My GMother died of diabetic coma, and my Daddy was insulin dependant most of his life, so it's a disease close to my heart! I tried looking at the vido... but being on dial up...hmmm
