hydrangea didn't fully bloom this year, any reason why?

Kensington, CT

I live in CT, The hydrangea is in full sun and looked beautiful for the last few years. This year all the blooms came out but they didn't fully open, the tops of the blooms did, but the rest of it didn't. Is there a reson why this happened?

Any help will be appreciated
Thanks

What type of hydrangea is it? And do you have a picture showing what you mean about the blooms? If it's a H. macrophylla, serrata, or quercifolia cultivar (these all bloom on old wood), it could be that you had a cold snap when the buds were forming that wasn't enough to kill them completely but was enough to damage them so the flowers don't look quite normal.

I agree with Ecrane, I have quite a few Hydrangeas in my garden and some have been wonderful and full of nice open flowers while others have very few, Do you dead head all the old flowers each Autumn or spring, I find this helps a bit, but I prefere to do this in spring as the old foliage and blooms help protect the plant from the frosts in winter months, we have had such a miserable summer but really wet cold winters lately that this has affected a lot of my flowering shrubs this summer. Also these plants are such prolific bloomers, have you fed them as this can help, if the foliage looks healthy, I think I would go along with the weather answer and just make sure you give it the right treatment end of this season to help it over the winter/spring months, but maybe if you could post a picture of the shrub, that would give more ideas as to what has happened. Good luck. WeeNel.
