Chicken Chat # 3

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

same guy. he doesn't own a dog [or any other critters] he is just a pathetic angry person who wants to make an example of me cause i stood up to his bullying. most everyone else is either scared of him or ignores him, except his best buddies across the street from his mother. ya'll don't see much o fme becasue i am chicken slave to chicks who likely won't live much longer.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

oh tf...so sorry to hear about your babies! ((chickens)) and prayers being sent your way !!

Foley, MO

Oh my God!!!!!!!!!! What can be done? A civil suit? Vet bills? I'm so sorry to hear this, what did he spray and with what? What are their symptoms? I don't know what to say Tf.

Clarkson, KY

Is this another bad neighbor episode or what? Please don't tell me he sprayed after the dog thing?!

Lodi, United States

Different neighbor--the ones with the guns and poison feed, not the dog. Right?

Clarkson, KY

What?! Please don't tell me there are that many crazies in one neighborhood! What on earth could generate that much malicious stupidity? AAAaarggh.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

im too pooped to expalin, but cat has the jest of it.

TF has gone through the ringer on this guy. Poor girl. The law is not helping her one bit. No matter what evidence she has , !
This guy is just evil. Then add stupid on that too. Yikes. Its a sad situation for her.

OK, confession time. I am a chicken addict.

So you remember that post that I posted a few days ago about the Craig's List birds. I went for a visit tonight, and here's what I got:

1 creme brabanter
1 buff polish
1 spitzhaben
1 speckled sussex
1 dominique
(all laying, all "adult" birds)
2 baby blue laced red wyandottes, about 6 weeks old, hopefully 1 male, 1 female

I am done. I am so done. I cannot possibly get any more birds. Done done done.
(plus I still have those hatching eggs...)

Thank you, Chicken Fairy, for not visiting me any more for a long time.
:-)

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Double yolkers! Awesome Frans!! Woo HOO!

LOL you are so NOT done :) LOL they will come to you at night while you sleep Muwahahahaha
wow on them eggs !!!

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

Christy.. you are so very hooked... when was the last time your tv was on? LOL..
If it's been on were you watching or did you suddenly remember something you needed to do outside? lol How many are you up to now?

Lodi, United States

Claire, I have vague memories of you saying, not so very long ago, that you weren't sure if you had the time for even two chickens. CF's juju is very strong.....

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Is anyone on, I posted a thread about chickens eating eggs and am wondering what I can do about it, I miss my eggs...

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

oops sorry claire.. I called you christy... who's christy??

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

ladybugs is Christy!

Claire "you are lost and gone forever, dreadful sorry, Clementine"...

frans, i have inherited a cornish rock pullet who already has laid three eggs... i have to keep them in a penthouse, what kind of bedding is best for those short legs? i have wood chips in there, but could add those pellets... or grass hay... does she need a nesting box, or does it just POP out... mine are named Socco and Hanna...

sue, thanks. just when i think it can't get any worse...

now we have lost our GP, just as well, the neighbor would shoot a dog just for belonging to us. she ran off with her pup when DH went out with a headlamp to check on them, it scared her. took s few days, but we got the pup back. he is confined to be sure she doens' tcome back for him... DH is sleeping out with him to keep him quiet...

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

tf, the roost just like the other girls.. I just gave them a 2x4 and they roost on the 4 side.. and get this.. dh made stairs because they would try to fly up to the roost and couldn't get enough lift, yet kept trying.. mind you it is only a foot up..

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

OK, note to self, wait for DH to really owe me BIG time, then explain the need for a four inch roost 12" above a few 6 inch steps.... no prob! hope they like the wood chips for a while. i can't turn them out, too many hens would peck them...

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Yes, I am so very hooked. My TV? I have a TV??? Actually, I did watch some of the olympics, but not too much. I am not much of a TV person. When I was a child, my mother set a limit of 2 hours of TV per WEEK. And even then only when it was approved educational programming (approved by her, that is!). So, I have never been a big TV watcher and I am still not! The funny thing is, about a month before I ventured into the chicken department, I bought a new TV. I had been using a 27 inch for a long time and I decided I needed an upgrade, so I got this awesome 48 inch LG flat screen, and now I don't watch it!! LOLOL!!!

I prefer to read, or be outside gardening and chickening. :-)

So yes, you are right, I thought I might not have enough time for 2, and now, including chicks, I have 32 birds and 30 eggs. Dang....

I will be looking for homes for my roo chicks though...

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

wow you did move up there. Are you planning on having fertile eggs? If so the one roo you do have will not be enough for all your hens. I think it is 1 roo to 8-12 hens.

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

Tia.. you leave that roo alone... he is living in hen heaven... he thinks he is enough!!!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

this is true, i know my phoenix is in hen heaven even tho I have 3 or 4 RIR roos. They have no interest in the hens. They are only 4 months old tho.

TF there is a joke iwth GP , " what do you call a GP off a leash ? " ...... "gone " !!!!
poor pups lost his mama . Hope she comes back and you can keep her . DOn't let them off a leash or near an open gate .
Dusty can help you on them ask her.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I put some pics of my new birds in a new thread "My new fancy girls" in case anyone wants to see.

oooh love pics !!

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

Came across an ad on craigslist... dh always shakes his head.. but I think I am converting him.. this time we both looked at each other.. got the eye glaze over all 4 of our eyeballs and emailed very quickly... he is currently on his second trip home with these giant crates... lol.. what do we have planned... LOL... I donno... neither does he.. but they are something just waiting to be something!

http://chambana.craigslist.org/zip/815216929.html

brooders ?
hmmm those are cool , so many things to make !
chicken coops ?
that is a cool find !

Lodi, United States

With three of my five layers broody--I ran out of eggs for my DH's egg salad. So he bought some at the supermarket. Yes, they are pale and pasty--although these were a little fresher than usual (very hard to peel). But as I peeled the shells off, I came upon one egg that was a little different--a little longer--and it hit me hard that this was the egg of a particular chicken. And that chicken will never peck at bugs or stretch its wings or run around flapping in the sunlight. It is horrible.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

UGH! i shudder to think of the million a day egg factory they are building not far from here...

meanwhile, HANNA LAID AN EGG! we can EAT this egg! yippee!

Lodi, United States

Yea! A sign of better things to come.

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

yea to the crates what a great find. yea to Hanna and her egg.

I fried up some eggs for the chickens yesterday and used the 1st egg that was laid and cracked and showed my daughter the difference in the eggs, she was amazed at how the white was uniform on my free range egg and how the you white on the store bought one was cloudy and messy.

I am still only getting one egg, hoping the other 4 start soon. I will try to get a pic of my eggy girl today.

yeah Hanna

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

Major clapping here! Wahoo! tf, hope the 'cloud' is leaving your area for good. Need more sun there!

Yeah luvs on the lesson. Bet she'll never eat another store bought egg, once she tastes a real egg!
