My delphiniums have seeds on them that I can dump in my hand and save for next year. I live in North Dakota. If I sew them now, will they grow next spring, or is it better to start indoors or seed in the spring?
delphiniums, self-seed?
I would put them in flats, and put them outside and let them get the same treatment they would get just falling on the ground naturally, except you can put something over them to protect them from birds or bugs, and pull out any weeds. Many seeds will sprout soon after falling, and many others sprout in fall or just when conditions are right so you never know, they could start growing right away, or next spring, or, like most of my seeds, never.
I find Delphiniums are better sewing the fresher the seeds, after that you might have to chill them for a few weeks to break the dormancy of the seed cycle, (the seeds think they have been through a winter) I never have much luck with this and only a few seeds ever germinate for me, but others can tell you different, flat trays are best, dont cover the seeds as they are very tiny, if you want to cover them, try some horticultural sand sifted very thin on top, water the flat trays from the bottom in a dish of water so you dont dislodge the seeds with a hose or water can, some can germinate in a few weeks while others can take a few months so if you dont get then by this time, keep the trays in a cool area and dont throw them out till next spring summer, they are not predictable to germinate, be patient, Good luck.
