I planted a hydrangea PG last spring, and it's doing fairly well, except that it keeps producing blooms down at soil level. Some of them appear to have almost no stem at all. Other than location, they're perfect blooms.
I think this means that the new growth is all happening at the bottom, but it sure looks like there's new growth in the midst of the plant, too. I didn't take a picture when I planted it, so I may be imagining the new growth. Still, I've never heard of flowers coming straight out of the dirt.
Having trouble keeping the blooms blue, too, but that's a different problem, and I know how to treat it.
Any suggestions for the bottom blossoms?
Peegee Hydrangea Weirdness
If your blooms are blue then it's not a PG, they only bloom white. If it's blue it's a macrophylla cultivar, and most of those bloom only on old wood, which would explain why all your blossoms are down toward the bottom. Next year's flowers will be on the branches that grew this year, so hopefully it should look more normal in future years, although you'll always have the issue to some extent because they're always putting out new growth but the blooms only occur on old wood.
Ah-HA! Thanks.
