Several of my azaleas have had too much water. They appear to be recovering from it after letting them dry out for several days. At what point should I restart watering them? Other sites have said to start when the first two inches of the soil is dry, but since these first year plants have shallow roots that are easily damaged, this idea doesn't seem to be practical.
When to restart watering Azaleas
I dont know what zone you are in or the soil conditions you have, but these plants should not need watered so often as most plants do, they need acidic soil to do well and well drained so they dont sit with their roots in wet soil, I would water less and cover the root/planting area with a thick mulch to retain moisture rather than pouring lots or water onto the soil, they also dont always take kindly to tap water and prefere rain water instead as the tap water can upset the soil acidity too much, a little tap water in really dry hot conditions wont harm them but too much, depending on you city water can harm them, thick leaf-mould as a mulch would be good as this keeps the acidity up a bit more than other mulches. these plants will always have shallow roots as they spread under the soil rather than go deep into it like other shrubs, hope this helps you out a bit. good luck.
