Another one Debbie.....

any ideas? the darn thing has fallen over with the heat of the morning sun :( but it was gorgeous (and shocking, lol I had not realized it sent up a bud) while it was up!

That is huge!! I cannot wait for Debbie to check in on this one.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

sorry--didn't see it until now
=)

that's a Habranthus x floryii hybrid to me--sold under a lot of names these days like "cherry cups" and "cherry pink" and "Habranthus amazing jumbo" and many others, what ever folks decide to call them this year--lol--but a Hab x floryii under any other name is still.....

huge bulbs, fairly responsive to rain, scroll down the page here a bit for more info:
http://www.solasgardens.com/773.html

Marie--off topic but Lycoris radiata starting to bloom here after the 1.5" big inches of rain from eduardo...go figure

also other rainlilies, I'll post a few later tonight after I finish going thru all 135 of them from the last few days.....

Amazing jumbo, that was it, that for the hybrid name Debbie! Nice to see it'll make a clump quickly, too.

So if I just water my lycoris a lot they will start blooming?

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Lycoris doesn't respond to the hose for me at all and that one's about 2-3 weeks earlier than I've ever seen it bloom. It's also not all of them trying to bloom--just about a fourth of them, maybe. L sprengeri is showing signs of life too. Just goes to show that there really is no order to when the Lycoris species will bloom (despite what some people think)--every year is rather different (again, something everyone that grows a lot of bulbs knows), and this year has turned out to be very odd for all kinds of bloom sequences on bulbs (including the rain lilies). Very dry winter, spring, and summer here except for these storms. Unusual for us.

The two rains we did get (not big amounts but all at once) also set some crinums off again--for the third time on some of them. Normal spring bloom, then dolly, now this latest storm.

Red rhodophiala bifida is about ready to bloom too--also 2 weeks early. I've seen signs of life in Sternbergia species lately too. some fall blooming perennials are also acting funny and starting to bloom early now also--namely Salvia azurea. Never seen it bloom here before the end of September.

As far as it goes this time of year usually goes--that song "wake me up when Sept. ends" usually sums it up well for me--but September might be more interesting than normal this year. Supposed to rain this afternoon here--and started sprinkling on me while using the bbq pit yesterday afternoon. I just hope it stays dry enough this week to get all those Louisiana Iris dug--that's the next big job I have. Then I can start bulb seeds again--much more fun than digging in August--LOL

rather ratty looking crinums blooming again--for the third time, another first for this otherwise unremarkable variety.

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

well bugger, I guess I'll keep doing what I'm doing, sigh.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I'll try really hard to send another storm ya'lls way--dolly was a lot more generous with the rain out that way than here.
=)

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

Please.......a dance may be in order!

I have had about 1/2" rain the whole summer, it's very sad :( The worst part is having the monsoon humidity but not the rain.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I haven't had much either--maybe 3/4-1" out of dolly and 1-1.5" maybe out of eduardo. Other than that zippo really. Cloudy and humid here too this morning--but will probably not rain here. I will take the cooler temps though

got some nice looking rebloom on several daylillies though--and that's surprising this time of year too, usually blooms look bleached this time of year. also just snapped another daylilly that's blooming again and looking real good this morning, haven't processed it yet

this one I think is Dragon flight and its definitely from yesterday--not too ratty looking for this late in the summer and our heat/humidity levels

Thumbnail by dmj1218
Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

Oh yeah, any day that isn't over 110 is not a bad day.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

it is getting old isn't it? I guess I just like winter more than most because most of what I grow are winter growers and we don't really have winters either. I also miss rain--which is mainly in the winter and spring here. Although it evaded us this winter and spring--its bad when you have to look to the gulf for rain. pop up summer afternoon thunderstorms have popped up somewhere this year too

I can work in the heat and that part is OK--taking 2-3 showers a day gets old. constant laundry for clothes and towels--that's getting old. go in to the movies or to the pub or to a restaurant and everything is over airconditioned, constantly misplacing my sunglasses. I can't work or drive or do anything with out my sunglasses

wake me up when sept ends

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Well hello there!1 I was wondering where you ahd been hiding!! Love your crinum! The one I received from you fro my b-day is putting up it's third or 4th bloom stalk. I LOVE it!!
I think I have a lycoris getting ready to open!! I have planted quite a few that have not ever bloomed. I will buy more this year and mark them this time so I can keep track of them.

I want to see pictures of both your Lycoris and rhodophiala bifida when they bloom. I have had zero luck with either of these.

As for the rain, I am tired of hearing that it has rained in every other part of the valley except my house. I think rain dancers are in order Lynn!!

omg I misplace my sunglasses all the time and I also can't do anything without them, cannot for the life of me understand how folks can be out in the sun (or on an overcast day!) and not need sunglasses. freaked DH out the other day trying to find them.

I can work in the heat, too........but it's one of those things I have to build up...like I have to be out there everyday, if I am not then it's hard to get back out in it, my body declines lol having a pool really helps....if I remember to use it.

Sadly most of my plants are summer growers....I should work on adding more winter growers, and I have been, but darn it I love tropicals!

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I need one of those "clappers" for my sunglasses--lol--I have a lot of other kind of plants that are summer growers, just not most of my bulbs

working in the heat you get used to, I agree--I never seem to get a break from it so I stay used to it

Marie I don't understand about your Rhodophiala bifida's not doing well--I know I've never sent you any, I just assumed you already had them so I never stuck them in as a bonus--I have reds and pinks--I'll stick you some in next year. Mine have all been re-planted for the season, that's one bulb I don't ship "in the green" it reproduces really well for me if I leave it alone from mid-Aug to end of April. Glad to know Ellen is doing well--I already have another crinum in mind for your next birthday, how 'bout that pink one above? I have a bazillion of those.

I'm really surprised I'm up this early--I'm usually not; I think I was just exhausted last night. A guy from Spain wanted seeds late last night and I added up 3 + 4 + 4 and came up with $10--he emailed me early this morning and said he PayPal'd $11. Pitiful on my end--lol

guess I'll make me some pancakes and try to get started on digging those LA Iris. That's the sale this month

here's another "plastic looking" flower for you--some Zeph roseus, these are really short only about 3"-4" tall and I almost missed them under a daylilly, got some others that are better but still fishing thru all these blooms pictures from "eduardo-that-wasn't"

lol on the addition

Love that roseus, I have some of those, hopefully they'll bloom soon, too!

YOUR Zeph roseus ARE BEAUTIFUL AS WELL.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Debbie I did not get any Rhodophiala bifida's from you. I ordered some maybe 2 years ago from some place ont he internet. Anyway they never did anything. No leaves , no flowers nada!!

I wish I was not at work this early but I am an early bird. I cannot sleep past 6 most day even if I have the option too. I always feel like I have missed most of my day if I sleep in. I have always been like that and dread when I really start getting older and need less sleep.

I will need some Zeph roseus when it is time to order again!! Although I may have one hiding somewhere.

nice Zeph grandiflora trouble--what red are you talking about?

Marie and Az--here's a very shy and very tiny 2" Texas native I spent a while on yesterday trying to get a good picture of--still wasn't successful at that but it grows well, its a winter-grower down her--I do a lot of seeds on this one and the next one

this one Zeph smallii

Thumbnail by dmj1218
Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

marie, did you not get any of Alan's 'chocolate rain lilies' at the swap? I am certain they are roseus, am also certain the "dwarf pink" from BTA is the same as well....I got both and am waiting for blooms, for now they are identical.

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

That's adorable :)

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

I did get some from Alan. I planted them here and there. Debbie I like Zeph smallii. I have had a hard time getting good pictures of my rain lilies lately for some reason.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

its the kids Marie--I used to be an early riser when Robin was little, she's almost 20 now

Another shy Texas native Zeph jonesii--also a winter grower but a lot taller and has a lot more green in it than Z smallii--I do a lot of international seed business on these two--I need to get them in the Texas Natives thread, along with about 8 others when I get some time

can you tell I'm resisting getting out there and getting started today?
Debbie

"cherry cups

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

if its yellow or white I do too Marie

Here's a first year bloom on a Eucomis montana--foliage looks real ratty due to the drought, but at least its not yellow or white

Thumbnail by dmj1218
Montgomery, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh that's a new one for me, please post the blooms, when you get them.
It is raining good where I am right now. We need it, my daylilies will get some relief.

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

resistance is futile, by I try nevertheless, sooner or later some work has to be done!

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

trouble x2--that's Zeph grandiflora not a Habranthus--notice how the stigma leans over at a weird angle? dead give away for Z grandiflora, I can spot it a long way off in the growing fields

Lilium speciosum rubra "Uchida" still pumping out blooms despite the 95+ days

Thumbnail by dmj1218
Montgomery, TX(Zone 9a)

I have a lot to learn.
Just enjoying ya'll's beautiful plants.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Trouble this is the place to lear and Debbie knows tons!! :o) Does the times 2 mean kids?

Debbie I planted a Eucomis to this year but it kinda got buried behind some other plants and has not grown much :o(

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

zeph's and hab's are just sort of a specialty of mine--certain little quirks about them catch my eye and I can spot them a long way off, which helps because they aren't that large

L radiata thinkin' a bit more strongly about blooming this morning Marie--crappy overcast light this morning for pictures

Thumbnail by dmj1218
Montgomery, TX(Zone 9a)

Isn't that referred to as spider lilies? I have some of those but not blooming yet.

Montgomery, TX(Zone 9a)

Trouble X2 mean double trouble.LOL!

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Eucomis takes a couple of years to adjust here too Marie--I put a fairly decent picture of Eucomis vandermerwei in the plantfiles earlier this year--I also have some lost in a nepetia (sp?--perennial)

my friend the rangoon creeper has finally recovered from being hacked back so many times for the fence fiasco and is starting to bloom again...

this and the Lycoris show all the weeds I need to get out there and pull prior to digging the LA's--lol

Thumbnail by dmj1218
west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

yes, trouble its also called spider lilies--I have a lot of those too and that one's definitely blooming way too early
=)

last bad shot of the morning, another plant blooming 2 months early for me Salvia azurea, another Texas native

I think I can be more successful weeding rather than picture taking this morning.....
=)

Thumbnail by dmj1218
Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Debbie I love that hamelia as a background for the Salvia!! I am going to plant rangoon creeper this next spring too!!

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

thank you Marie! hamelia's are very drought tolerant too after a couple of years, its in the most xeric area I have
=)

still haven't gotten around to those pancakes yet--lol
