Is this dead corn?

Allen, TX

I planted corn directly in my SFG and it took off nicely for quite a while. Then we started getting 100 degrees everyday here in N. Texas. Now, despite frequent watering, this is what has become of my corn plant! I am so frustrated and angry! I can't get ANYTHING to grow properly!!!!!

What should I do? Should I rip it out and try planting something else? Is it too hot for anything to grow? Should I wait for the fall to re-plant?

Yes...I have dead corn in my garden, and it looks just like this.

Just out of curiosity, did you only plant 1 corn plant? If that's the case, you wouldn't get any corn off the plant anyway. Corn plants must be grown in multiples, and in very close proximity in order for pollination to occur.

Hope this helps! I'd definitely take this plant out and maybe try squash--something fast growing and productive. :) While I'm not familiar with the Texas growing season, I started my second planting of corn back in June....I have a feeling it's a little late in the season to start another batch. You could do carrots, though!!

TXBBQ- I'm here in southern Florida and gave up growing anything around July 1 because It is so hot day and night. In the growing season that starts for most part in Sept , everything grows great. Maybe you are trying to beat mother nature. I tried, and it didn't work. Your state should have a vegetable planting guide on line to reference like Florida does. As far as your watermelon problem, I had 5 little beauties growing and they all shrivelled up and died. No bees- no pollination. Tried hand pollination and got incomplete pollination. Tricky stuff mother nature. Good luck, just don't get mad.

Rip it out. Do you like Okra? It loves the heat. What kind of soil is that? It looks like you spent some money improving it.

Corn loves the heat. But maybe not Texas heat, I don't know. Everywhere you look in Indiana, there's corn - we get tired of seeing it, so I'm sorry to hear that you're frustrated over it.

What about growing peppers? Don't they love the heat? Mine got broadmites, so that's my gardening frustration of the season. I reeeally wanted peppers.

Good luck. Don't give up.
