I have a shady slope where I'd like to feature primroses (primula, not oenothera) and am wondering how deer resistant they might be?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Karen
Are primroses deer resistant?
Here's a great list: http://clearwaterlandscapes.com/deer_resistance.htm
It says Primula are rarely eaten.
Thanks, Ceejay - have saved it to my favorites - have not seen Primula sp. on other lists of deer-resistant plants.
By the way, although our local bindweed (a morning glory belonging to genus Calystegia) grows too well even in local deer-infested areas around here, a favorite plant in my garden for them is Ipomoea nil - quite a heart breaker.
I have 2-year old seedlings mainly of Primula sieboldii that I grew from seed from the NARGS seed exchange (http://www.nargs.org/), and so far the deer haven't bothered those (except when their hooves smash a plant down) - was hoping to feature as many species of Primula as I could on our shady hillside (http://www.nargs.org/).
These seeds have winter-sown for me beautifully - see http://www.wintersown.org/ (DG also has a winter sowing forum, but no matter how many species of primrose you may submit for its database as having been successfully wintersown, if they came from Asia, the forum will classify it as "Asian primrose" - the DG winter sowing database is useless if you are interested in growing unusual plants from seed exchanges such as those given above and others).
Well! looks like www.wintersown.org has been updated - there are some more great deer links on their database page - http://www.wintersown.org/wseo1/Seed_Lists.html (this website becomes more specific for plant names on database pages for individual plant zones)
thanks again,
karen
