GM that downy is too cute! Your barred owl pic is better than this one of the hawk I saw this morning, but he wasn't very cooperative!

Frank that purple gallinule is unbelievable on those lotus petals! Wow!

Love all your shots. That parrot wow!

I would have had that Barred Owl shot too if I hadn't been standing there thinking... OMG there it is right in front of me...I was just in awe of it!

This litlle Son Sparrow stayed right ahead of me for about a quarter mile the other day on my walk. It was so cute!

Quoting:
I thought, NZ had this bird type to ourselfs

They're a different species (Porphyrio porphyrio), much larger than Moorhen (nearly 3 times heavier). Swamphen does have a fairly wide Old World distribution though, from southern Spain to South Africa, east to southeast Asia and Australia, as well as New Zealand.

What you do have that's unique to NZ is Takahe, that's similar to Swamphen but even larger, too large to be able to fly.

Resin

Blenheim, New Zealand

thanks resin , the size does differ quite a bit, they had looked about the same to me!!

if I ever manage to save enough , I would go on the day trip to maud Island to take pics of the Takahe.one day.

PERTH, Australia

bootandall, the Pink Eared Ducks are very wary. I wish I could have got a better shot, showing the shovelling bill.

This pic is of our local swamp hen, Porphyrio porphyrio, but yours look as if it's a more sturdy bird.

Here's what Takahe look like for comparison: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Porphyrio_hochstetteri

Florence, MS(Zone 8b)

the takahe have feather colors like our Purple Gallinules. The feet and legs are different and the gallinules have the blue patch on their head. The gallinules are the same size as our moorhens.
