Daily pics Vol 130
Beautiful pics everyone!
Wonderful pics guys!
I thought, NZ had this bird type to ourselfs
we all them pukeko or swamphens
They're a different species (Porphyrio porphyrio), much larger than Moorhen (nearly 3 times heavier). Swamphen does have a fairly wide Old World distribution though, from southern Spain to South Africa, east to southeast Asia and Australia, as well as New Zealand.
What you do have that's unique to NZ is Takahe, that's similar to Swamphen but even larger, too large to be able to fly.
Resin
thanks resin , the size does differ quite a bit, they had looked about the same to me!!
if I ever manage to save enough , I would go on the day trip to maud Island to take pics of the Takahe.one day.
Here's what Takahe look like for comparison: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Porphyrio_hochstetteri
Wow his outfit is gorgeous Margaret; very nice pic!
Love the Red-shouldered Hawk nanny!
