okay for all you who are following the extreme yard makeover we did for mom.... we will use this thread for follow up photos... we can all watch her garden grow and fill in!
we came from here http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/865712/
and this is what her yard looked like on June 28, 2008 when we finished up the 'makeover'
As Mom's Garden Grows.....
okay, Back to the discussion of mums....
all of my mums are budded up right now, but no blooms, so I can:
A) take a clump of each and send them ALL to you
B) wait patiently for them to bloom and then make a mental note (ya right!) of where the peach ones are.
C) just buy you some peach mums! lol!
which do you prefer? lol!
I bought all mine at HD or Lowes and they were already blooming (last year) not sure if you remember... but they are in pots all over the front yard. All of the colors blend nicely together and I do need to divide them... so just let me know :o)
Thanks Anjl, I also did the same for 'Whats blooming 4'. I don't have dial up but still have a Pain In The A## computer, still has a problem. Sign!!!!!
I gave up on Mums long ago, they don't like where I live. LOL
What about a one of these.

Not sure what just happened, But I love the seasonal changes in this plant. Just a idea mom.
Wanted to send a pic, won't let me. HMMMMM
I am doing cuttings on my Hearty Fuschia now. thats how I got this one from a broken branch 3 years and running, and lived Thu all the winters.
Also have some Weeping Pussy Willow cuttings that I have just started.
Let me know if you are interested, they make it I will mark some for you.
When Pea comes to help me with the lily's I will sent them (if they make it)
One Fuchsia is already spoken for, she asked me for one last winter.
oooh! I love fuschia!
thats what sis MIL has in a huge hanging pot...mine dont do so well here :o( I think its too hot for them
This one is not pot Friendly, It will grow to 5' tall one with very sturdy branches. I'm thinking if it will grow in zone 8 it should stay year round in your zone. Has no problem with heat, maybe a little shade. I don't know its name, but it is a Hardy Fushia, not the hanging one everyone buys out here and has to winter over.
Tills
OK, so I didn't know (remember) the real name! Heck, just call them "MUMS", then I know! Anyone want to know about chickens, peafowl, pheasant, or quail (both domestic & some wild)? HA!
That is a Cool Fuschia. It does well in the winter? My MIL would kill for that, I am sure. She buys hers every year. Only winters the Geraniums that have been in family since 50's or so.....what a hassle that can be! Loses half of cuttings every time. Too hot in house with dry heat, too cold in green house! Can't win!
Tilly, is that bamboo you are linking too? Doesn't it all 'take over' like a weed? Most I have seen do, but other varieties, maybe not??? Confused now......(easily!) lol
Nandina is called Heavenly bamboo, but it isn't a bamboo. It's a great plant and now it comes in all sizes. It's evergreen, makes berries, changes color in the fall. Not much that isn't perfect about it, although some are getting tired of it as it's used more and more (and sheared by those landscape people - that should be against the law).
how big does the heavenly bamboo get?
And....does it take a lot of space - spread?
lol, thats what I was worried about. not so much height as girth :o)
she doesnt have much space where our 'bald' spot is.... if I remember right, maybe 2 1/2-3 foot area...
No - it's a shrub. You get one and that's it. I have several underneath a mature fir tree (previous owner) and they are the more common variety and are about 4 ft tall. Nandina domestica: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=nandina+domestica&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&resnum=1&ct=title.
But it looks like, from the link that Mary posted, there are several dwarf forms:

Making a decision is what's going to be hard.
lol, ya thats always the hard part for me...cause I want one of everything! lol!
do the berries make a mess? thinking this may be good under moms pine trees in back yard?
No, they're in little sprays, just a few per plant - and they're red and cranberry size. They are kind of hard, so nothing mushy that gets messy. Really, there is nothing difficult about this plant. I had one in a pot on my deck until I killed it. I'm actually considering getting another to keep things looking alive in winter - especially after this conversation. I love the really red ones.
I think it'd do great under the pines trees. With anything under there, you'll want to plant in fall, when they're dormant and it's going to be cool and less stressful and then make sure also to water them regularly through the winter until they get settle.
hmm, just thinking better under trees in back (if mom likes them!) to add winter interest and color there. she really does have a small space in front. fuschia may also be too big there, its right next to her pathway so I'm thinking mums would work in there (easier to control) but really like the heavenly bamboo too!
Yeah, if mom likes, mums in front & heavenly bamboo in back. (fuschia & rhody might work there too, if they like shade??? Just thoughts, as I have absolutely No Greenthumb! Kill plants seems to be my middle name
lol, well we are CHANGING your middle name then! tee hee!
to what? kill plants? lol
Sister Green New leaf!
hmmm, then I dont think the fuschia will work under her pine trees ! but I did plant some caladium all over her yard. so we can split those next year and plant some under the pines for color.
I really like the idea of the heavenly bamboo under the trees too.
I think we are going to put mums and her iris in the bare spot. mums will fill in when iris are gone.
Hey Pat,
Remember that duplex I lived at in Whittier? There was Heavenly Bamboo under the front windows. I knew nothing about gardening, and when I was told I was supposed to take care of the shrubs by the landlord (I thought the guy who cut the grass did it!) I had to buy some hedge clippers. By the time I got it cut down past the window sill, there was no greenery left. Just ugly brown stalks. It eventually came back but sure was ugly. Now I have some here and it does add interest in the winter time.
Sharon
Actually, I was at NWGordon's on Monday night and he has a cape fuchsia at the base of a big tree. The tree was limbed up about 20 feet, so there was some light. It just needs to be watered regularly.
lol, well moms trees WERE limbed at about 6 inches off the ground... now, because the pea gravel delivery guy was late :o) they are about 6' off the ground. Amazing what 2 determined young ladies can accomplish with a rusty old fashined hand saw and a rickety old wooden ladder!
* I still cringe at the thought of climbing up that ladder again! lol!*
Well then, that's perfect. If you put a soaker hose under there, you can probably get lots of part-shade lovers in there: Brunnera, Phygelius, Hellebore, Hosta, to name a few.
hey sis, saw soaker hoses on co-op thread somewhere......
here -- what do ya think? Mom, your thoughts??? What would ya want to put there?
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/883482/
you can get soaker hose at HD or wally world too :o)
i think caladiums, fuschias, heavenly bamboo....
mom...where are ya!?
Caladiums will be annuals there . . .
I personally like all the ideas. MOM???
I will look for soaker hose when I get the tar stump killer stuff @ HD - when I am not dying of heat trying to get home after work! Just don't recall prices - thought you'd know though.... Mom, can you check wally world next time your in Chehalis?
also fair coming up 8-12, you interested????
Which fair are you talking about?
I will check on the price of soaker hose when I go to Walmart next. Would like to get 2 or three. I always wanted soaker hoses. That way I only water my yard, not the driveway, neighbors driveway and the street too.
I would love to go to the fair. Zhinu, that is the SW Wash. Fair in Chehalis.
Be aware that some people don't like them - can't get the water pressure consistent all along the hose. So maybe before you commit to too many, try one or two and see how they work for you . . .
I've had mixed success with them and have gone back to sprinklers for the most part. I keep thinking I'm going to trying it again in a different area.
I had to arrange mine so the most water came out where it needed more and had to add some holes, but I finally got it to work as I wanted it to.
Good, will plan for the fair then....WaHoo! Hope you want to check out the animals too.....
Go for 1 soaker hose first. Thinking park has enough pressure - but just in case. Then can get more if it works out.
What about the plants mentioned above? Any ideas on what you would want? Mostly for that area under the trees in back.
Got some Iris's for us today..... need to figure out which is what......lol
What about cyclamen? They're a lot of fun.
katie, do you have a pix? I'm not sure what they are!
Mine right now are at there sleep time, so all you see is these little brown curly things. The flowers will come first, then the foliage, them back to sleep and start over as the slowly spread.
Hows this
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2506/
I got a new baby
Artemisia 'Nana Silvermound'
oh gosh! what was I thinking?! of course I know what those are! I planted them in neighbors yard last year! I like them!!!
They are fun!!
