Tomato Questions

Clifton Hill, MO

I have a few plants that the leaves have turned brown, can this be from too much rain? We had over 5 inches in the last 2 weeks. Some of my plants are just fine, nice and green leaves. Also, how can you prevent tomatoes from getting sunburned, I have seen people use sheets but wonder if they have to be white sheets since all I have are colored ones. Thanks!

I'm no expert, just playing detective here. Is there any link between the browned plants that doesn't affect the green ones? More sun, less water, something like that?
I wouldn't think the color of the sheets will matter-its the shade that counts. It might make a prettier garden though;>)

Thanks for your help. All my tomato plants are in the same row and get full sun. It has been quite a year weather-wise for us, had over 10 inches of rain in July when usually we are burning up.

As for the sheets its been in the upper 90's the past 3 days so I just covered the tomatoes with the sheets I had, and yes it is quite colorful lol Oh well, I just hope to save some of them.

I would like advise, please, on when to transplant tomatoes from starter peat pots to my above-ground garden. I am using the (organic) "All New Square Foot Gardening". Planted seeds directly, but they did not grow at all. Don't know why. I did get a late start (end of May) but I was told that shouldn't have been an issue.

In the pic, I have Brandywine's and Romas in the peat pots. It seems too early to transplant them now, but is this the time to begin putting them outside for a little while to "harden off" as I've read about?
