Hardiness zone for Dahlias

Lenoir, NC(Zone 7a)

Does anyone know if Dahlias are hardy and come back in zone 7 or do I need to dig them up in the fall?

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7b)

I think it may depend on the variety. I'm in zone 7 and grew one for the first time this year. I think the pack on mine said it was only hard to zone 9, so I'll bring it inside for the winter.

I don't remember what the variety or name is. It is one of the plants with dark green to black foliage. I have 2 dahlias (both with the dark foliage) and this is the first year I've tried to grow them. I have 1 planted in full sun and 1 in part sun. The 1 in full sun doesn't seem to be doing well. Some of the foliage is turning light green to almost yellow and it hasn't bloomed again since it was planted despite being covered with buds. How much sun do you have yours planted in and are they blooming?

Valsolda, Italy(Zone 9b)

I have a giant dahlia in a pot on my terrace. It survives the winters here in zone7b with no trouble. Mine gets the morning sun only. I have been on holiday for a month and it died to the ground in June, because of the drought. It is recovering vigirously, but still no flowers.

Yes it does seem to be recovering well. If mine doesn't improve by fall maybe I'll move it. I would send you a picture but I can't find my camera. The other dahlia I have planted where it only gets morning sun. It seems to be doing OK, it's still blooming. Thanks sasha10.

Most of them are hardy only in zones 8-10. You may luck out and find varieties that will survive by why take the chance. Leave them in containers and bring them in for the winter.
