growing shrubs in containers

Grants Pass, OR

I just got 2 one-gallon sized Amelanchier alnifolia (serviceberry) plants. Can I successfully raise them in large containers? Will they still produce lots of berries--how big of a container? Do I increase the container size over time?

I'm fairly certain that the health of the plant isn't affected by being in a container, as long as it's basic needs are met-food, water and space for the roots. If it does well for a while, then begins to look unhealthy I'd consider the replanting.

Plants in containers have special water needs, and they are exposed to about 20 degrees colder temps than plants in the ground. They also suffer more in severe heat.
