Hydrangea

Clifton Hill, MO

This is my hydrangea that I planted 3 years ago, It is only about 5 inches tall. It gets midday sun but the rest of the day it's in the shade. Any help on what I can do with it would be greatly appreciated.

The only thing I can see wrong with your picture is the rocks you're using for mulch. When the sunlight hits those it's probably cooking the roots. For starters I'd get rid of those rocks (make at least a three foot rock-free circle). Make sure that the roots of the hydrangea are almost showing and then very lightly mulch around it with pine bark or a similar mulch but keep the mulch at least three inches away from the crown of the plant. Variegated hydrangeas are typically less vigorous but the miserable performance of yours is ridiculous. Hopefully a proper mulching will kick it into gear.

I have the same hydrangea and mine has grown a lot with only morning sun but has never bloomed.
I agree with everything plantfreak said in the above post.

I think I will move mine this fall to a spot where it will get a little more sun. It is leaning toward the sun right now.

The other thing I can think of besides the rocks is that it may not be getting enough water (which could have been a side effect of the rocks too, or it could be even once you remove the rocks they'll still need a bit more water than you've been giving them). I tend to grow most of my hydrangeas a little bit on the dry side relative to what they'd ideally enjoy, and the ones that stay drier definitely grow more slowly.
