peony trees

i'm a new gardner guys. this is my first year. i have 2 peony trees both of which i bought at local nurseries. i've learned a lot online but i still have some questions. As the trees get larger and add on new woody branches, where do they come from? do the stems the leaves grow on become woody brances over time or do new branches with bark grow out from the trunk of the tree? i have heard both and the people i've spoke to at local nurseries don't seem to know anything about them. please help!

I'm not completely sure I know what you are asking, but if you wondering if the new braches have a woody appearance when they emerge from the trunk, the answer is no. They "mature" over time.

thank you. that is exactly what i wanted to know. so the trees i have now are full of green stems with leaves on them. does that mean they will all become new branches when they "mature"? 1 of my plants i just got about a month ago and i'm keeping it in the pot to plant in fall (i'm told it's best to plant them in the fall.) some of the leaves are starting to look "rough"; they have brown spots in places and i wanted to know if i could trim these leaves off? i've been told that peony trees store their flower buds for the next year at the point where the leaf joins the stem. I don't want to remove the leaves if it will prevent the tree from blooming next year. thanks again for your help growgirl.

The tree peony in the picture is a fairly mature specimen planted at a the JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh. Although it does occasionally send up new branches from the roots, most of the new growth comes from other branches. Which is why it looks bigger on top instead of uniformly branched.
