Sweet 100s...not so sweet!

Silver Spring, MD

I'm hoping you all can help!

I've got a Sweet 100 tomato plant, and the first tomatoes on it finally turned red. They were such a beautiful color. Then I bit into one....so bitter! I am not using chemicals to garden, and the bitter taste wasn't even a chemical taste. It was just thoroughly bitter.

Also, many of the leaves have turned yellow, although many are still very green and growing tomatoes. The stalk/stem has turned brown and almost wood-like in texture for about 8 inches from the ground up.

Any ideas about what's happening to my plant?

Thanks!

Update: a few more tomatoes were ready, so I picked them, and they were also bitter. It appears that the whole tomato plant may be dying. More and more leaves are turning limp and yellow or brown. Can this plant be saved?

I am wondering what type of soil you are growing these in?

I'm growing in a community garden, so it's questionable what was there before I started. I mixed local organic compost into the soil, and when the plants didn't seem to be growing very well, applied a manure tea to the soil. Following the manure treatment, the plants really took off. Is it time to add another treatment?
