Brussels Sprouts!!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I have never tried to grow these before and this spring decided to try some, buying a small pack of seedlings (along with a few kohlrabi and savoy cabbage). The kohlrabi is long finished, as is the cabbage. The brussels sprouts kept growing taller (for 3 months!), but nada on fruiting... 2 weeks ago I noticed 'nubbins' and today there are actually a few large enough to harvest!

By the way, no one ever told me you need to cut off the stalks just below each nubbin as they start to emerge. NOW they will get more sunlight... Duh!

I'm SO excited!

Looking awesome!!! Those are going to be wonderful for dinner. I steam them until they are just knife-tender.

I halve mine, sauté in a bit of butter, add a dollop of raspberry vinegar. Yum.

I just found a neat brussels sprouts recipe... only it's in video form (with a short intro commercial, sorry)

Thanks for the cooking suggestions. You've sold me on trying them again. My stepmother would always dump a frozen bag of them into a pot with a little water and they were the most horrible thing ever. I'll give them another chance.

I love growing B sprouts. Bubbles and Roodnorf produce small, tight hard, single bite size sprouts, and are sweet. I live in northern oregon and we can let the cole crops stand in the garden all winter, and pick as needed. Keeep up the good work. Frank
