Seed Propagation Using Sand

Orangeburg, SC

Help! I'm so new to seed gardening and to this website and forum. The instructions for planting my seeds states to plant it in sand. When I went to Wal-Mart, instead of a nursery or gardening supply store, I noticed bags of play sand and pavers sand. Will either of these work for me? Also, I have heard of course builders sand? Is this what I should be looking for?

Are you sure it said to start them in sand? That's not a typical medium for starting seeds. With some seeds that are really tiny they'll tell you to mix them with sand before you sow them, but that's to help you get better spacing between the seeds so you don't have to thin out as many seedlings later on, maybe that's what they meant? But you don't plant them in sand, you mix the seeds with sand and then sprinkle that mixture on top of the seed starting mix. If that's what the sand is supposed to be for then it shouldn't matter what kind of sand you use.

Yes, I'm sure. I bought some Bird of Paradise seeds (pretty ambitious aren't I for someone new to seed growing) from T&M Seeds and the instruction states to press seeds into moist sand and seal inside a polythene bag. I was a little surprised when I read the instructions. I know that I'll be waiting forever for them to grow to flowering size. Thanks for your help. Maybe someone else can guide me.

I'm not sure which forum it would be, but you might try asking in the specific forum for Bird of Paradise. They would know how to plant them. Does anyone know which forum that would be?

Hi Deebie. Try posting on the Seed Germination forum. Lots of seeders and someone will have tried it for sure ^_^ Hope this helps.

Beach sand would contain salt, and I wouldn't think it would be a good idea to use that.
