Spaghetti Squash Fruit Disappeared Overnight. Help!

Atlanta, GA

I'm a total spaghetti squash novice, but I swear I thought I had a little fruit/squash on the vine yesterday & this a.m. it's gone with the wind that swept through Georgia (yep, I'm in Atlanta)! I've read the squash posts re: difference between male & female flowers & went out & looked at the vine & think I've identified the females. The female flowers appear to wither & die & leave a little fingernail sized green growth/bump which I hope is the fruit; however, the best looking one was there yesterday p.m. & gone this a.m. Do birds, squirrels and/or chipmunks eat the baby fruit? Got a boatload of back yard critters. I read on another website that you have to tie the fruit up with support hose to keep them from overwhelming the vine as they grow big & my vine is twining along a 24" metal garden edger (to keep the dogs out of the victory garden), but It doesn't look like I'm going to get that far. What to do to protect the baby fruit? Tie a knee high stocking over the fruit to keep the critters off? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance!

Squirrels certainly do! They did a number on my squash and gourds last year. I have my suspicions about the raccoons, too.

I put ziplock bags on mine [I use ziplocks for everything].

And then there are the deer ...

If it was still really small, it's possible it never got pollinated, and just fell off. The only real luck I'm having with squash this year is with the unidentified volunteer in the tomato patch. Figures*G*. Of course, maybe it will be spectacular....
