a strip... big enough for a theme but not trees

Irvine, CA

I have a strip of cleared ground in full sun next to the driveway. It gets very full sun, and has been hard to grow plants because the soil is this very dry hard clay. So first I could use advice on soil amendments and such.

Second the plants... There is a strip of canna lilies along the back, and nothing else.
I'm undecided if I want to theme to them with tropical looking plants.
draught resistant plants are also important here.

Any Ideas for Small Trees ?
I really like African tree fern because I want a plant which will give shade, but not grow too big.

any general suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

You should start with your soil-it won't matter what you decide to plant if you can't make it thrive! While you are trying to decide what will look best, begin by working some kind of organic material into the clay, so that the plant roots won't have to work so hard to spread. There are all kinds of things you could use-run over some hay with your lawn mower to chop it up, then turn it in, use leaves, pine shavings, even the bagged amendments you can buy at any nursery or home improvement place. By getting a head start you will have better luck with whatever you decide to plant.
I've seen an interesting version of a Mulberry tree that has been designed to look more like a weeping willow. A Mulberry tree grows quickly, and if you want the fruit you will have it in plenty.
