A friend's garden is being decimated by moles eating the roots of her perennials, especially likes the large hostas. She has tried the sound-wave things, doesn't work. She can't put out poison because she has dogs. She is getting desperate! She has a cat, but it doesn't bother with the critters.
Moles in the garden
First she needs to figure out what she has--moles don't eat plants, although as they're tunneling they can do some collateral damage to plants in the process. They eat things like grubs, so one way to control them is to use milky spore to get the grubs, then the moles won't have any food left so they'll move on. But if she's sure that they're eating the plants, then it's probably voles instead of moles, so the milky spore won't do any good in that case. For both moles and voles there are various repellant sprays that you can buy--I know none of them work on gophers, but maybe with moles and voles she'd have better luck. Or you can trap them.
