Expanding a project

London, Canada

This is my first year gardening, and I am loving it! My landlord also loves what I am doing enough to ask me to do all of the properties in my neighbourhood controlled by her business. That is 4-5 properties...its going to be a big project...to start a lot of cleaning up and trying to get rid of weeds. Are there any easy, natural ways to get rid of weeds? Is the best thing still to just pull them out by the root? Is it too late to start so many gardens now? I am in southwestern ontario. ANy ideas or suggestions would be great...ill come back in a day or two and post pics of the properties to be done. Thanks all!

You might consider asking your landlord to hire someone to come in and dig out all the weeds--that sort of thing doesn't require any skill, then you could spend your efforts on putting plants in after the weeds are gone. Otherwise, if you don't want to use chemicals, you could just cut them all down fairly low, then put several layers of newspaper overtop. You can dig holes through the newspaper to plant and it'll decompose over time and improve the soil. Finish off with a layer of mulch and you're all set! (the newspapers and mulch are a good idea even if the landlord has someone remove the weeds for you, it'll help prevent new ones from growing there)

As far as when to plant, typically summer's not the best time to plant things, although I don't know how hot your summers are so maybe you'd have better luck than many people would. Depending on what time frame your landlord would be happy with, maybe you could get the newspaper & mulch down now to get rid of the weeds, then there might be some things you could plant in the fall, and then next spring really get busy with putting in everything else.
