Hi,
I have had hostas for about 5 years. They were given to me and I just planted them around a huge pecan tree. They have always come back every year, big and beautiful. This year they haven't gotten nearly as big and haven't even filled the spaces between.I really haven't given them any care to speak of. Is there something I should be doing that I don't know about? I live in N.C.near the coast. We normally don't have to dig up any of our bulb plants in the winter.
Thanks-Lynda
Hostas
Depending upon your type of hosta plant, as a general rule hostas need to be divided every three to four years by digging them up and dividing the clumps in half. This can be done in spring or late summer. Hostas die back every year and division will help to renew growth each year as well as provide the required space hostas need to continue to grow in abundance. Additionally you should apply either a slow release or liquid fertilizer on a regular basis. If you still do not see progress another option is to test the soil around your hosta plants and perhaps renew the soil during the division process.
JoGreen-- thanks for that info. I have had hostas for few years and have never heard about the division.
I just heard about it last year, and did it then--My hostas were more beautiful than ever this year, and I got to donate some to my church.
The pecan tree may also be competing for the moisture they need.
