Have they got you with any of the summer sales?

North Chelmsford, MA(Zone 6b)

Oh, yes. Our Mahoney's is having 50% off all perennials(which brings them down to what I think is reasonable.) Every time I drive by I seem to come home with a plant!

Evie Beevie, I envy your being near Rocky Dale. I live in Massachusetts, but when I visit my son (who works in Essex Jct) and daughter-in-law (goes to quilt shop there) I always come back with something(s) absolutely irresistible from Rocky Dale.

You're all right--HD doesn't water, and they throw the plants out when they could be salvaged by someone who would give them a good home. I would, really. Bummer!

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

I'd love to have vines climbing over my evergreen shrubs, but never knew if the vigorous ones would be harmful in any way (like blocking sunlight).

So I too would love to see/read more about that!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I would not worry about blocking light, especially for group 3 clems, which get cut back each year. Certain evergreens, like arborvitae, just don't lend themselves to this because there is no easy way for the clem to cling as it grows upward.

On the QF, either is fine. Being a late bloomer, you're not going to get a clem that will have its major bloom at the same time. However, there are a few with long bloom times and others with a limited re-bloom that can pair nicely with the blooms. I have done it with other paniculatas, but not QF yet. Pairing with a nice blue or some purples results in a cool combo with the white to pink blooms of QF. Your tastes may vary.

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

I decided to play a little hookie from work and discovered a local nursery is having a buy 1 get 1 free on some of their perennials. I got some purple salvia which I'd want anyway, as well as some white blooming astilbe, which I would want anyway. w00t!

Now, if it only weren't so hot.

Evie cheer up the days are getting shorter. Birds chirpped at 4:13 a month ago and now it is like 5:20. In other words enjoy the warmth while you can.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

78 and dry is warmth. 90 (humid or not) is torture.

No not torture. 90 all year long would be peachy

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Christina - here is Venosa voilacea with red-twig dogwood. The photo was taken a bit too late. The white in the center of the clem is much more pronounced and the variegation in the dogwood was whiter. It looked great when they first came out.

Thanks Victor. Looks great to me! When I was trying to think of the more open shrubs I have, I totally forgot about red-twig dogwood. I have the same (or similar) variegated one as in your photo. Maybe I'll give it a try with the Marie Louise Jensen which is also a dark purple.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have some other photos I will try to find. I've also used Itea, Physocarpus, Nandina, crape myrtle and Spirea thnbergii.

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

I agree re: 90, Victor! And I like that vine on the dogwood. I'll have to experiment more. When's another sale? :)

schickenlady - So what the hell are you doing in NH if you want 90 all the time??

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

GC has sales throughout the fall.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Christina - I also use clems to ramble along on the ground. In this photo, they are growing on top of my low juniper. Took years to get full like this. This is Ramona, a group 2.

Gorgeous!! (just don't like the "it took years" part ;o)

I have a huge white clem that I bought probably 10+ years ago when I knew next to nothing about gardening. I planted it by my mailbox and gave it a little 3 foot tall trellis. It never really did much until the last two years. This year it was stunning - dozens of huge white blooms. I was thinking I would move it this fall because it's not in a location where it can climb. But now having seen your picture above, I might just keep it where it is and let it just mingle horizontally with the pachysandra instead of trying to make it climb vertically...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks. Here is the same from '06. I like that the anthers on the Ramona echoes the small J maple.

So I see some sedum and irises in there too. Do you just leave the clem foliage in place after it's done blooming and the other perennials grow up through it?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes. And I don't usually bother to prune the clems at all. Normally, you prune 2's back to the first set of new buds in the early spring.

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

You don't prune any of yours, or just your 2's?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I prune all of the 3's. I also treat 2's as 3's for the first few years to help them establish themselves better. Once established, I do the regular light pruning for 2's, when I remember. For this rambling one, I don't bother and it does just fine.

Very nice, looks nice and healthy. You put me to shame, not a weed in sight, all nicely mulched. Just perfect. What is the name of the evergreen that is cascading down in back of your new beauty?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

good question - they have them all the time at HD - green and yellow/green - if i can find the name i'll let you know - thought the white blooms would look good with that as a back drop.

Craryville, NY

Isn't that a Blue Rug Juniper? Don't know it's Latin name....
