STOOOP !!!!!
Everytime I read about Garden Crossings sale I am tempted to check the place out.
How can I find room for another thing.
The Ecenacia are sounding good.
Have they got you with any of the summer sales?
Chistina it is Victor's fault - EVERYONE needs someone to blame and he's our guy!
Hee hee - I'll be the fall guy. Where's my sword to fall on?
Hi, I'm Morrigan and I am glad to be back. I have so far managed to look at the GC site and click the back button without buying a single thing.....but....help me guys, I think I am in need of an intervention!!!! ARRRRRGH! Victor....I'm going to make you be my sponsor! tee hee.
Courage, mo!
Oh, Candyce, you poor creature, let me make you a cup of tea and let you rest!
LOL! Carrie!
I feel great!! I had never been to a nursery like this before. It seemed more like a public garden to me, so I walked and oohed and ahhed over everything I saw. I tried to stay in the shade as much as possible, but that didn't always happen.
I wrote a review of Davis Brook Farm for the 'Go Gardening' section. Anna and I really enjoyed our visit there. I would recommend a visit to anyone who comes through our area. It's well worth the stop.
Lovely review and it looks like a lovely place! Someday....
Okay so they snagged me again. http://www.gardencrossings.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/plants.specials/index.htm
But I really can use these as I am redoing a bed out back so really it's not totally impulse buying. Right? :)
Here is what I got this time: http://www.gardencrossings.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/plants.plantDetail/plant_id/1027/index.htm http://www.gardencrossings.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/plants.plantDetail/plant_id/334 Think I got the last one of these.

I have no resistance at all, I admit it.
Yes, I got that email from them today too. You'll like the Stokesia. I planted it in the spring so hopefully it will be good next year. I like the small size.
I just got the 50% off designer daylilies sale in my email inbox.
Trying not to click....
Think I'll succeed??
Cant get me.
My credit card was hacked again, I can't believe it.
It was hacked the 28th of June.
I have fall bulb orders with J. Sheepers and Brent $B and an order in with Ensata. Now I have to call them again with the new card number when it comes in three days.
What a pain
Wow - that's too bad, Jo Anne. Such a hassle.
Well, I haven't caved too badly. I actually went to the local Walmart for a few non-plant items. Wound up with some plants though. Our WM isn;t too bad here. Got three spreadingphlox for our rock wall, one coreopsis which was a good size and in good shape for 2.99!!! and two little hostas to put in when we transplant a misplanted blue spruce near to side of the house. Ok, so.....its all Victor's fault and I DO have at least a Bowie knife for you to fall on!
More appropriate to fall on a yucca.
ngam - it is not fair to add the links - and with the garden double i am being accused of making here by victor the enabler - that stokesia is very tempting:)
i received two oakleaf snowflake hydrangea yesterday rarefind nursery. no sale deals though.
How were they, Bill? How was your trip?
they are big and well packaged - just have to find a home for them. flew in from detroit and my wife tells me there is a big box in front of the garage - hoping they would arrive today - working form home and could have got them in the ground without her noticing:)
trip was great - good weather - river was high - and we beat the t-storms home on sunday. thx for asking.
next week is my annual trip to pixieland and baxter state park - was going alone and now my nephew will join me - he was suppose to be on his way to marine basic training and it got delayed till oct - now he will go through uncle Bill basic training as a warm up - 16 mile days for 5 days only half of that will be with a full backpack - i can't wait! there are bets within the family he will not come back:)
Wow - you're a drill sargent! You're not going to wimp out and bring something to drink, are you? Take pictures!
LOL Bill . I do not claim any responsibility for purchases as a result of "information only" links. :)
Your trip sounds like fun for anyone who has been lifting large rocks all season. Your nephew however may not be so ready to start out. You on the other hand could probably carry him, a backpack and a small village at this point. Like Victor said take pics and don't be too hard on the young man. Have a good trip.
i always take a full photo story beginning with the approach to Katahdin and a pic of the ranger when you drive in. it will be a couple of hundred pic's so i'll only post a few.
for full disclosure - one of the couples this past weekend brought there son who just returned from Iraq - i asked him about basic training and it is slightly more gruelling than my agenda. My wife listened and then asked my i have some much trouble getting someone to come with me. half the day is a hike to the next lean-too - second half he is free to stay put - we will be on lakes by ourselves that have canoes to use so he can just hang out - i will go out and explore and came back and hope to catch some trout for dinner.
we'll have plenty of water - had a bad experience on mt. washington climbing our of the great gulf where i decided to wait to fill my water bottles and then there was no water on the trail - my legs cramped up and had to walk out like frankenstein with legs stiff to ward off the cramping - hurt like hell for a week - i'll probably make him pump the MSR though.
Very nice - they do such a great job of packing.
Oooo lots of goodies. Nice healthy well packed plants. I love that.
Yes I am! Especially since I already had a dozen or so things to plant before adding to my pile! I did make a good dent in it tonight though. I would have gotten more done if I didn't have to dodge lightning bolts every so often, LOL.
Anyone have any creative ways to incorporate clematis into a bed? I got 5 different varieties and don't really know where I'm going to plant them...
Climbing through a shrub or tree?
Really?? Cool idea! Hydrangeas maybe?
I dunno - I guess it depends who blooms when. I have some in a rose bush, but I don't know the names of either!
I've been doing that for a few years now, Christina. I have very few clems growing up a trellis, arbor, etc. What kind of hydrangea are you considering? You can pair clems with shrubs either to match their bloom times or have the clem bloom at a different time, giving the shrub a 'virtual second bloom'. They will need more attention to watering. I use crystals. Also, remember that you will not only be be seeing clem blooms, but lots of clem foliage as well.
I have endless summer, pennsylvania pride, Japanese hydrangea, bluebird, teller blue, nikko blue...
What other shrubs would you recommend?
In general, a more open structure shrub works best. If it's tight, like big-leaf hydrangeas and say, barberries, it's more work to keep directing the clem as it climbs. It will tend to fall off and as I said earlier, you will end up with a mass of foliage on the outside of the shrub. Also, a more open one allows more rain to get to it. Works very well on paniculatas. You can do it with those macros you mentioned, just be prepared to help it along more. I have tried them on virtually every shrub and that's what led me to this advice. I would not try on very closed, dense shrubs, conifers, etc.
I think I'll take that advice. I'm not sure I'd like how all the foliage it would look on the hydrangeas.
Clethra perhaps? Oooh...how about sambucus nigra 'burgundy lace'?
Sambucus is nice and open. Clethra is not bad. That's one I have not tried yet! Next year. I have paired them with many viburnums.
Victor, do you have any full shots of your shrubs with clematis? I saw a few close ups of the flowers, but I'm hoping to see the whole thing so I'll have a better idea of what it will look like as they mature.
I forgot to include Quick Fire in my list of Hydrangeas. It seems more open than the macros, but it's my first year with it so perhaps it will fill in more. Are you familiar with that one? I also have a few oakleafs but they are in quite a bit of shade so probably not a good choice for mingling with clems.
For viburnums I have two doublefiles: 'Summer Snowflake' and 'Mariesii', Cardinal Candy, and I want to say Korean spice, but I think its another one very similar to that instead. They all seem kind of dense to me so I'm not sure if they'd be good candidates ?? Which viburnums do you pair with your clems?
I'll look for pics. This is the third year I'm doing it in a big way so some are just getting there now. I've used many viburnums, including Mariesii. Yes, I have QuickFire, and that would be good to try.
I have QuickFire and I'm extremely happy with it. I'd pair it with something early, because the show happening now with QF is too gorgeous to detract from, IMHO.
Point well-noted. Mine is still mostly white...
