Denisemb...Any improvement on the Sunpatience? Since the last post, I have to say mine are getting crappier by the day. No matter how much I water, or sing to them (hehe). Dried out looking leaves and the darker ones are the most suffering. White ones are better, but not great like they were last year.

Container Renovations 4! (smile)
Kat - funny you should ask. Was ready to pull them out of the containers & replant, but thought I'd try giving them a haircut first. We'll see if a few weeks of TLC will coax some new growth. I'll keep you apprised of my "experiment".
Anyhow, tomorrow I hit the nurseries to search out the perfect plant for my new ladyhead planter. (Yes, folks, KatG is now minus one "head" from her DG marketplace, LOL). She arrived this week beautifully packaged (the planter, NOT Kat) and I LOVE her! Thanks, Kat!
Denise: I cut half back and they're doing really bad - I think I'm going to pull them this weekend and replace with something like Periwinkle/Vinca. I don't like those growing in the ground but the do well in pots.
Did you find something good for your Head? hahahaha (Headache meds? Head-on? - I'm just kidding, that just sounded funny!)
I don't know if you remember a couple months back I posted on the previous thread about my Fountain - converted planter just crumbling and falling over when I was watering my Sunpatiens?
Well, the mystery was solved today. I just figured it was cheap tin or something - NO!
I remember back in May, this landscape lighting fellow I have called my office in a panic saying that he had damaged one of my planters. I never did talk to him about it and could never figure out which planter he was talking about as everything seemed intact.
This week the lighting maintenance renewal letter came and he mentioned that he still needs to do something about the planter he damaged so I called to see what the heck he was talking about. Turns out he backed into the Fountain/Planter when he was here one day. I guess he tried to stand it back up and did a fairly good job of it until I went out and watered! hahahaha. Wonder what the back of his truck looked like? This thing is heavy!

Well, you have to give him points for being honest! haha
Not much new in my container garden except for AMAZON growth! It's just not really a time to plant and I'm going to just try to keep things under control until it gets to be a bit cooler...There are some interesting transformations from the original plantings.
Here's a pot of Sunpatience with Redstar Cordyline...
KatG . . .
I am just popping in and haven't been to this forum before and MUST read this thread.
I only wanted to say that this is just about the most clever creations I have yet to see

VERY CREATIVE - I LOVE THEM ALL . . .
Especially that little precious furball in the center. Now that is a little cutie.

Kat, what's the grassy looking plant streaming out of the pot just under the "red bow?"
Kat or anyone else who can answer my question,
How should I overwinter my caladiums? I will be movin in November so I was wondering if I could just cut off the foliage and store the bulbs.
bivbiv - That's called "Fibre Optic" plant and it really does look like it!
Tina
I dig up and store caladium bulbs. I usually put them in a big plastic bin in the garage and they do fine. We have very mild winters here.
phughes,
what kind of soil do you use to store them in?
Tina -
I don't overwinter mine but I think this is what most people do: Take the caladiums up before frost and let them dry in a warm spot. Cut back any leaves or foliage after it's died and keep the bulbs above 50degrees.(and below 60) I've heard of some people wrapping them in newspaper but I think packing them in loose Peat moss may be better. After any threats of frost you can plant them - knotty side up! hehe. I think the magic number is 72 degree ground temperature to have them resprout!
Kat
Thanks Kat,
When we move I'll just bring them in to the room with us at night.
I don't pack them in any soil but I too think that peat is probably the best thing to use. I have a couple of pots of caladiums on my patio also and I just leave them in the pots, cut the stems off after they die and stop watering during the winter season. They come back year after year. The ones I put in the ground I just dig up and toss in the bin, store it on a shelf in the garage and then plant em come April or May. I used to do my whole front beds in caladiums but now have switched to coleus. I still plant a few though.
Hi katg.
I have been wondering for some time if your lanai roof is screen, open or does it have some type of roof. Its a wonderful space.
Linda
Do you label them when you store them?
Thanks, Kat. I think I'll try to find some.
LindaCa - Thank-you! It's all Screen!
The screening is designed to keep most bugs (except no-seeums), frogs, snakes, debri, etc. out of the pool. They still get in though, but not as many as if it was un-screened. However, it does cut the sun exposure down about 25% and it's a perfect area for a container garden. It really is kind of mystifying to me why we're only one part of the Country that has adopted Pool cages. Even the East Coast of Florida doesn't usually have them??? I think some people in Arizona have them, but have you ever seen a Pool cage in California?
Kat
I just back from an unbelievable round-trip Alaskan Cruise originating in Vancouver,
I'm blown away by the flowers and containers in these chilly cities! Everywhere we went there were just amazing street planters, hanging baskets full of just gorgeous thriving annuals! (same flowers I plant that last 2 months in the heat!). Beautiful flowers everywhere!
Such really creative and innovative plantings...
I know...I shouldn't complain, because I get to garden all year round...but they were truly beautiful!
If you ever in your lifetime have the inclination or opportunity to visit Alaska...you just have to go!
I'm not sure there's another place on this earth that is so beautiful and pristine. It's just awesome! And we only travelled the southern part. I can't imagine what we would have seen if we travelled North.
Here's a little slideshow I put together and if you have a few minutes, check it out. Oh yeah...we had a lot of fun!

Kat
beautiful photos... looks like you had a great time
Hi Kat,
Great Pictures, I really enjoyed them. Looks like lots for fun. My SIL is from Alaska, I think its alot different living there than visiting. Beautiful though to cold for me. Its always so much fun to see a picture of someone you feel like you know through Daves Garden. Thanks
I don't know anyone in CA with a pool cage. I would love to have one around my pool. I guess the bugs are not as bad in our dry climate but we still have plenty of bugs. Our weather here is hot dry summers and cool wet winters. We get no rain from about April or May unit Nov or Dec. Hot daytime 90-100s temps and cool nights 40s in the summer.
at least where I live thats the normal. East SF bay. Your lanai is to beautiful I would live out there.
Linda
Awesome slide show Kat - This one's definitely on my to do list - I would like to have a balcony cabin also - how cold was it?---Have you ever been to Hawaii - not Honolulu - Kaui, etc. - it is beautiful - We did two things that were awesome - open rescue helicopter tour and sunset whale watch cruise (Jan) - the weather is always great - you should see the stars at night - WOW - if you haven't gone - you gotta
Wow what a great slideshow. the pics are awesome.
Great pictures---I almost feel as if I were on the cruise with you both. Beautiful colors on the glaciers, I don't understand how they got to be so blue inside. Almost looks like blue food coloring. Please take more pictures of your next trip so that I can go along again. I also enjoyed looking at your gardens. Lovely! Laverne
Kat!
"Peggy" head & I have been wondering where you've been! An Alaskan cruise, too cool and great photos (as always)! Just curious...was that a Celebrity ship?
2vernes! I have my own theory about that deep blue ice, and I'm glad you commented!!! hehe. I didn't put it on the slideshow because Don is so sick of hearing it (haha!).
Experts say it's air pockets that form and combines with this very old ice that creates this incredible blue color...Nah! It's all the blue stuff we put in our toilets -1001 flushes, Tidy Bowl and Sani-flush. It goes into the water through our sewers, septics, etc...get's evaporated into the air and lands on the glaciers! HAHAHAHAHA.
I know, that's crazy...but it really is the same color. It's amazing! The funny thing is...the ship took one of the lifeboats out and brought back a huge chunk of ice for everybody to see on the deck. It was crystal clear. Not a speck of dirt or pollution, you could see right through it!
The Hubbard Glacier is actually advancing...which is a bit of a contradiction to greenhouse effect theory's.
Kitty...We spent so much time out on the balcony and it really wasn't that cold. I looked ridiculous in my robe, socks, sweatpants and a blanket around me, but it was great. The lowest it got was maybe 45. Other than that it was temperate and felt colder when it was rainy. Most days it was around 55. I've been to Hawaii years ago, but only Honolulu...You're right, from what I hear, the other Islands are just amazing.
Denise!
How is that hard-headed Peggy doing? haha
Yes...it was a Celebrity ship. One of the older smaller ones - Mercury. We were on Century before and it was almost like a mirror copy, so you knew your way around. I really like this line. The crew is just fantastic.
Linda...I have a lot of Canadian customers who rent homes from me and are just fascinated by the pool cages. They don't have a long season, but would love a cage as it cuts down so much on the maintenance and cleaning of their pools. With the snow in the winter, it wouldn't work with the weight on the top of the cage. But, if somebody could come up with removeable snap-in or Velcro attached panels on the roof...it would probably be an incredible seller. 95% of pools have them here and it's a good thing.
Thanks Tina and Onewish...We had an absolute Blast!
I am getting so sick of these crazy storms that have been threatening us this season. Fay was supposed to ram right into us and I spent the day before bringing in 90 homes lanai furniture (3 teams of 2). When I got home, I had to do my own...Luckilly I had some help and my living room looked like a Patio furniture warehouse. Not only that...We had to move a lot of my containers into a more sheltered area. Fay missed us and it worked out good as I got to pressure clean the deck before I put everything back.
Now that everything is back and looking pretty...Here's stupid IKE on the warpath!
Here we go again! Arrrrgggghhhh. It's days away, but I don't like Ike! Sad thing is...if it's not us, somebody else is going to get it.

EmmaGrace:
Thank-you so much for the compliments. I sure have a lot of fun with these heads! Here in this small little town we sometimes need to create things to entertain ourselves. I had my best friend over last night and we might actually have to start planning a "Head wedding" OMG! Why not? We've held a dog wedding...and that was probably one of the funnest weddings I've ever attended! hehehehe
(Bride and Groom with Maid of Honor and Best Man! hahaha)

The Salmon we caught was shipped out on Tuesday and it arrived next day - I'm not just saying this because it's "my fish" (hehe), but it was the best Salmon I've ever had. I hate fishy-fish...and a lot of times don't cook enough fish because it's just never really fresh! I was so excited to cook. Baked the salmon with a fresh dill (out of my herb garden), lemon and butter mix and paired it up with some new red potatoes and a head of caulifower rubbed with a mayonnaise/mustard mix and baked with parmesan cheese. I was simple, but really delish!
I've got to start fishing from my dock!
