Morning Glories 2008 #09

Gautier, MS

Wow Joseph, beautiful blooms!!!

Thanks everyone! It is like opening a box of chocolates every morning this early in the season...you just don't know which new ones will pop open for you. LOL

I am happy Xiong's CMG is doing well for you, meag848! I need to get some pictures of the flowers when there is more light. The ones I posted above were low light conditions and the camera was operating on 1000 ASA so they were somewhat grainy. I like the nice wide picotee band on the flowers on both Xiong's and Berry Ice.

Great blooms Joseph...The asuka seems to commonly throw sports...

The border on the Berry Ice seems a bit larger than Xiong's and the throat has pigmentation deeper into the tube, but Xiong's has the red band in the throat that provides a stronger contrast in the throat area...both very nice...(!)

TTY,..

Ron

Thanks, Ron! Here is a photo of Xiong's CMG that has a bit wider border than yesterday's flower.

Joseph -

BEAUTIFUL!

What do you call this type of Picotee Edge?
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5314654

I had a MG last year that had the same type Picotee and am growing it again this year. This is the first bloom so it isn't that great but it did grow back True.

Looks like a Plum Youjiro - but this is the same vine as the above two Fuji Mines

Hi Emma, I don't know of a specific name for that dusting of white on the edge of the flower. I liked all of the flowers you posted there, especially the Kai no Kasumi, such delicate colored dot pattern!

Joseph

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Emma,

I'd call the white at the rib tips exactly that...small rib tip picotee...or picotee at rib tip...

The Fuji no Mine is kewl...maybe trying to get back to way it used to be...

TTY,...

OH!! Emma!! They are all so beautiful!!

Emma,

That type of white tip margin has a specific name in Japanese that has been translated by the electronic translators as a "Nail" margin. From my experience, it is a dominant trait and is often hidden behind a complete white margin....which is also a dominant trait. One often sees it in the "Minibar Rose" - "Cameo Elegance" strains. - Arlan

I have another flower of Dainagon that does not show the picotee rib tip. I will post a photo later on tonight.

Very nice all of them, Emma! :-) :-)

Your Yuuzuki with Star Pattern is my favorite. I have developed a fondness for the soft pink colored blooms. They remind me of the old-fashioned and romantic colors. :-) You just don't see that color very often in MGs. Yours is outstanding!!!

Your Rebecca vine is really lovely! Is the color of the blooms accurately depicted from your camera? I ask because I grew Rebecca last year and mine had a lot of magenta/purple in the blooms. http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/i/36557/

It seems that many times when I get seeds for a particular cultivar especially the I. purpureas ... the blooms are often a different color than is the norm. Do some of the I. purpurea come in different colors? Or is it not a true vine of that cultivar? This causes me some confusion. (And y'all know how easily I confuse.)

Emma,

Your "Yuuzuki with Star Pattern" is absolutely stunning. A real keeper..

Thanks all -

And Thanks Ron and Arlan for the ID on the Unusual Picotee Edge.
Ron, interesting observation about my Fuji Mine is reverting back to the Original. It is really a very pretty MG.

The Yuuzuki with Star Pattern - for some reason I always call it a Star Pattern, but it is actually called 'Rayed Pattern' I think.

Ron? Arlan?
What is the *Star Pattern* called.

Here is another New MG for me with a Star Pattern from the morning

Ukigumo first blooms.
The leaves are a very light Green, almost Chartreuse and the Blooms are an incredible beautiful Bright Blue.

Ukigumo New Foliage is very light. As they age they turn a bit darker but still a nice colored Light Green. The more mature leaves are also in this photo.

Becky . . .

Yes, the Rebecca Blooms are pretty much as the photo shows.
Here is another close up
Sometimes they will have a Reddish Hue that is also very pretty

Really nice blooms being shared! Thanks.

Emma,

The Star pattern is created by the dominant factor called Ray (Ry). The effect of this gene is described as concentrating the flower pigment at the rays - in a radial fashion. The geneticists have identified three different dominant Ray genes.

Thanks

Tricia . . .
Hi Tricia, I forgot your Daves name.

I grow my MGs EVERYWHERE.
I have some on Trellises. Some are on a 10' x 25' fence that was put up just for my MGs.
Also Jerry built me two more fences this year that are 5.5' x 16' long that are next to the taller fence. Plus some of the chain link fence area I use. A lattice area, and a wood fence with fencing material that is attached 4" away from the wood fence. Then, there are pots that I also plant some MGs in. I still have a lot of room left to go with the rest of the MGs that I'm getting started now.

Emma

Here are a couple of my Trellises - photo is a little blurry
They are placed at two different angles

Here is a JMG that had an ID of Akatsuki no Mai, but in comparing my photo with those in Plantfiles, it isn't a good match. Maybe flowers later on will darken up and show the streaks of white.

Here's a JMG that came to me from Ronnie, ID'd 'Dai', it has a hint of yellow in the reverse tube and on the rays.

Wow! Never knew there is such variety in Morning Glory's. All are so beautiful.

I have this one (name unknown) growing in several spots in my garden.
