OT-More Outside Beauties-2 : )

I can never remember the name of this wonderful yellow shrub that blooms almost all year long.

I can also never remember this red blooming tropical.......had to crawl through the dense foliage to find this one.

The Duranta's are so pretty, I have a white one. They get gigantic, I keep mine small but it is hard.

(Zone 1)

Gail, I love the Duranta too. I don't have any in my yard but they are real popular down here ... most let them grow to tree size too! I love the one with the purple flowers but the white alba is nice too!

Oh, I know that red blooming tropical! My friend has them in her backyard. She has the really huge live oak trees in her yard and those are growing in shade in her backyard. I can't remember the botanical name but is that the one called Cardinal Flower? http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=images+of+cardinal+flower&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&resnum=1&ct=title

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Absolutely beautiful everyone.
Gail, I love that color combination on the Duranta. Very pretty
Amy......Awesome daylily! Love the piecrust edging on in! Congratulations!
I have to admit, I have been so lazy (actually, just haven't had time) to get out there and take any updated pictures but looking out the window this morning I see Pink balloon plant, blue balloon plant, double blue balloon plant, dwarf white balloon plant, oriental lilies, coneflower, daylilies, bee balm, aster, rose campion etc. It's a great way to start the day :)
We are going to look at a dog this morning as everyone wants a dog and PROMISES that they are going to take care of it. I have already expressed my objections and why I object but they assure me that they understand my point but that this time it will be different. Even hubby wants a dog so I'm out numbered. It's a siberian husky so part of me believes it's already been adopted. We'll see I guess.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Kim

Hello everyone,
Lin, although I love the cardinal flower, this is not that one. It start with a J and my mind is blank. Before the day is out, I will remember the name (it is a tropical that freezes back to the ground and comes back fast and furious each year)

Kim, good luck on a dog that big. He will eat you out of house and home (LOL)

wish I could help..........maybe Lin will come along............can't believe that is a dahlia....how nice.

West Plains, MO(Zone 6b)

Dimmer - I'm not sure what that plant is - it looks strangely familiar, though. Have you tried posting a pic on the plant identification forum? Whenever I have posted there, someone answers me (with the correct ID) REALLY fast!

Here is a funny accident:
I wanted a pink, red, and white color scheme for two small beds in our front yard. Well, I ordered 'Scarlet' zinnia seeds from Stokes, and they turned out to be ORANGE! I was really upset, because we bought this house in February and I wanted everything to be perfect. But, I actually have come to like the color combo - it looks nice and "summery".

One of my favorite color combos is orange, hot pink and purple..............that bed looks great!

West Plains, MO(Zone 6b)

Here are two plants that you just have to try (if you already haven't)! Alabama Sunset Coleus is a knockout every time - in the evening, it even glows pink in the dim light. (Please excuse the holes - I think a caterpillar has been chomping away at my coleus. I am on the hunt for him!) And the other plant is the Crystal zinnia - I had the white one last year, and it is gorgeous also, with its little yellow center. I know most of you have been posting perrenials, but since I just planted a bunch this year, most of them haven't really taken off yet. Maybe next year!

Ooooh....orange, hot pink, and purple - that sounds really pretty. Food for thought for next year! Gail, I just read on another thread that you have shingles! My goodness, you are having a rough time. I am so sorry. I know you are having a good attitude about it, though.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am keeping my gratitude list going (lol).........what can you do but smile or cry.........smiling and having fun is easier.........thanks for your thoughts though!

(Zone 1)

Hello Ladies! Hope everyone had a great Saturday!

Dimmer: I love that flower called Art Deco, would never have guessed it was a Dahlia. I have that same Hoya! And, our sweet Gessiegail gave it to me too! It is Hoya australis and it's really growing this summer. I sure hope to see blooms on it before long!

Ericabelle: That is a gorgeous combination with the orange, pink and white! Really pretty! I love the Alabama Sunset Coleus too! I only have one small plant that has been hanging on for a few years. I really should take some cuttings to propagate! Now, tell me what is that variegated plant in the pot to the right of the Coleus? It looks a lot like the variegated cuban oregano but so tall I don't think that's it. I love variegated foliage and whatever that is, it sure is pretty!

Ok, Miss Kim has me taking pictures in the dark! I just had to go out and take a pic of my coleus.

Gail, I know what you mean. I have been through so many awful problems with illness, I just keep laughing. It helps!

LOVELY photos guys!!

West Plains, MO(Zone 6b)

Plantladylin, I tried to winter my Alabama Sunset coleus in the greenhouse, but a mishap with the temperature finished it off! I was happy to find it this year. Yours looks like it is doing well! And it is not being eaten by a critter! LOL
The variegated plant next to it (I was told) is variegated Swedish Ivy - I don't think it is ivy, though. It has a very strong herbal smell. Not necessarily a pleasant one. I have never had it before, but I have learned to never plant it in a pot with anything else! I had it planted in this pot with one red petunia and some orange lantana, and it crowded them both out. I still think it is very pretty. I love variegated plants, too. I also have a thing for plants with pink leaves!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

ericabelle, I think we are all in love with variegated leaves.........especially when they have pinks in them............

*****edited to say that this is the big health problem I have ever had..............not bragging.........just knowing that this, too, shall passs..........

You really have a lot more outside plants in Maine than I ever could have imagined , Kim!

The Mexican Shell flowers are neat! I love Balloon flowers. The Balloon flower pictures are great. They are really cool flowers.

West Plains, MO(Zone 6b)

Wow, those Mexican Shell flowers are really neat - I may have to grow those next year!
I had my first balloon flower this year, and I have totally fallen in love with them. I definitely plan to add some to the beds every year. That speckled one is super - I didn't know there was a speckled one.

Yum, I wish I could smell your pretty rose!

(Zone 1)

Oooh, look what beauties I missed today!

Dimmer: Wonderful blooms! LOVE that one called Mexican Shell ... is it a Daylily? Really gorgeous color!

KimK: OMG, I am loving Balloon Flowers, have always loved the blue but now that speckled one is really awesome! I didn't know there was one with speckles either!

Ericabelle: WOW! I have always loved, loved, loved roses! I had about 50 in my yard many years ago ... now all I have is a few of the knock outs. :( I've never heard of Dixie Gold but that has to be one of the most stunning blooms I've ever seen. I just love that color. Is it very fragrant? It looks like the perfect rose! That photo is worth enlarging and framing!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I love to frame good pictures of blooms to hang all over the house!

West Plains, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks, plantladylin - yes, I think that is my favorite rose of all time. It is pretty fragrant - just has a understated sweet smell. It was one of those cheap roses that they sometimes sell at Walmart packed in plastic bags with just a few stumps sticking out! I even got it when it was half off! It was a great find because I love the color and (since I'm originally from Mississippi) I love the name!
Fifty roses! Wow - that must have been beautiful! Did you move and have to leave them? I haven't had many roses - are they a lot of work? I have always been a little cautious with roses because I'm not sure if I can grow them. So, I always look for the ones that have won awards for disease resistance and the ones that claim to be easy to grow. Did you have any of the David Austin roses?

Gail - I hope you are starting to make a recovery! You are definitely in my thoughts and prayers!
I like to have photos of my flowers up all over the place, too - I usually put the best photos of the season on my screensaver. It really makes me feel like I have a green thumb because I see all the successes of each year! LOL =)

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Good Morning Everyone :)

Another busy weekend, however I did find a moment or two to pop in :)
Erica, that rose (and picture) are absolutely stunning! Perfect!
Kim, those Mexican Shell flowers are just stunning! Love the colors!

The platycodon (balloon plant) is such a wonderful perennial to have in the garden as it is so well behaved and blooms for such a long time.
They are very easy to start from seed and I always give away tons of seeds in the fall. It's nice because I get to see pictures of people's babies that they grew from seed from Maine :) I think that is awesome!
I have a big balloon project for next year. I'm going to do a dwarf white and dwarf blue border around the bed in the front. That means I will be starting all kinds of seeds too :)
The only thing is, I can't harvest the seed until around the end of October beginning of November. But that's OK as we are just going to put them in our refrigerator over the winter and start them in the spring.
I will have seeds from:

Tall Blue
Double Blue
Dwarf Blue
Dwarf White (these always have a purple hue to them........so pretty)
Tall Pink
Speckled Purple

Please understand that the speckled purple, like most fantasy blooms is unpredictable. You may start 10 seeds and get 5 that are speckled and 5 that are pure white the first year. The second year you may get 6 speckled (once speckled they stay speckled) 4 white (one of the whites may bloom speckled the next year as the fantasy can SOMETIMES take a bloom cycle to show up). Or you may get 10 speckled the first year. I'm hoping that I get at least a few plain white as I don't have a tall white in my collection yet *lol*

I will have tons of seed to share :)

Kim

I went outside to look for Tigger, the cat and look what I found. It is my corkscrew vine......when she really puts on a show, I will come back and take pictures of her purples, lavenders, golds and whites........

A Dger friend grew her from a seed last summer for me..............thank you, Patty Hughes!

I should have contained her height as I believe most of the blooms will on top of the storage building this year (LOL)

Love that flower, Gail!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Yes, very pretty . . .

I saw that storage building. . . as pretty as the blooms are, you better not climb up to get a pic from the top!

Gail, that corkscrew vine is beautiful! I always wondered if they were as pretty in person as the pictures in the catalogs, but they are even prettier.

Here is good ol' Black eyed Susan - they are blooming everywhere here. I will have to get some more since they seem to love this blankety-blank clay soil! LOL
