uh oh

(Zone 5b)

I ordered irises and they came in today and I guess I was expecting bulbs...I have some very crunchy looking celery stalks things with long roots...are these the rhizomes? I always wondered what a rhizome was! If they're celery, hey I'll salt 'em & eat 'em....but I'm thinking they're rhizomes. Yikes I have no idea what to do with these! Do I plant them now in zone 5? Or in Sept? Oh my goodness, I have some reading to do!

rhizomes ... you got it. Plant with the tops out of the soil or barely under and the roots down (does one side look dirtier than the other). My iris aren't picky about plant times thought they seem to like fall best.

I don't think one side looks dirtier...I've been carrying the box around like a baby...I can't attempt to plant them till next week, will they be ok with that? (or as my husband says, bury...as in lay to rest!) they look very nice & healthy, I hope I don't hurt them!

thanks flowerjen! I printed that out. Nowhere in there did it say to carry them around like a newborn baby...lol I bought some for my mother & sister, out of the 3 of us only my mother knows what to do! I have to drive them to different towns too! (the flowers, not the family) I think I can plant them tues or wed.....I'll have to check to see if any critters like them, word got out about the newbie gardener & the rabbits & groundhogs are having a field day (no pun intended) out there.

A tip from a wise old lady: Don't ever throw iris rhizomes away. Dump them in a field or by the side of the road. Chances are they will root and help beautify the countryside.
