survive neglect. I'm posting this for beginners so you will know how badly ANY plant wants to grow. I've had this one for 15 years, a Thanksgiving cactus and it bloomed beautifully every year, getting bigger and bigger. Moved it down to the in-law suite on the other end of the house and seldom go there (unoccupied). Needless to say, it was dead looking. I took it outside in it's pot and pulled all of the long leaves off. We had strong winds recently and the pot was thrown to the ground and broke. The plant is still on the ground and guess what?? New growth is emerging. Mother Nature never ceases to amaze me. I'll continue to post pics and see what happens in a few months. Happy gardening:)
The Little Cactus that "could"
one caution, once the stems get all dried out like that, they may put out new growth but they are also susceptible to rotting, and then the whole plant will die. If it seems really bad, it might be better to wait till you get some nice sized new growth and then take cuttings from it and start over in a fresh pot. Just a suggestion, yours may not be that far gone, but keep an eye out for the older growth to start getting mushy or falling apart.
