Beginner Gardener - berry question

Bristol, TN(Zone 6b)

I just posted for the first time today and now here I am again! These beautiful berries are in my neighbors yard and he's said I can take some if I want. My question is if I want to try and grow them in my yard do I just plant the berry itself or do I need to cut a piece off the vine and transplant it? He says they grow back every year. Also he's got them tied up with string, but I was wondering if it would be okay to plant them alongside the chainlink fence between our yards and just let them grow up it?

Also my other neighbor has two towering mullberry trees ( I think that's what they are called - I know the berries are fabulous though!) and I was wondering if it would be the same thing if I tried to transplant one into my yard.

Thanks for all of your help and suggestions in advance!

Raspberries and blackberries are brambles. I think if you want to start your own you would be better off to dig up part of the crown of the plant. See if your neighbor will let you divide his plants.

You can do layering on it, and then cut it off after it is rooted and plant the rooted cutting in your yard.

Sounds good. I don't know if he'll let me dig part of his plant up, but he would probably let me try the layering trick. I actually think the berries may be close enough to the fence that I might be able to train a vine or two over that way and then just do the layering from there. I'll post again if I can get them growing on my side of the fence! Thanks!

If you can bring them under your fence, you can layer them right there, I would think.
