This is my first year planting acorn squash not sure when it ready to be picked it is dark green the steam is not weathered which someone told me that is when it is ready give me some pointers

Assuming that you wish to use it as a winter squash, you want to leave it until it is fully mature. I wait until the vines die back, but if you are in a hurry, you can can pick them when the rind is harder than your fingernail. The stem will be hard and woody. The green acorns usually get an orange spot where they touch the ground. The flavor is better if they are cured for a couple of weeks to lose some of their water content.
