October Round-Up in south-western New Hampshire

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, Victor, it's not really my garden, it's my Dad's, but he is too old to take care of it, so I do it for him. My mother passed away in 2001 from cancer, and I have been taking care of the gardens ever since then, adding to them, renovating the old ones, etc. I think she would be proud of all the work I've put into them. It's truly a labor of love.

Karen

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thats really nice of you to do Karen, I'm sure your Mom is very proud. Gardens that are a labor of love are always the best kind!!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, btw, victor, I didn't really answer your question on how big the gardens are. My Dad has 1.25 acres, and there are a lot of gardens on that acerage now. There is room for more, though, and I find it tough to keep up with all the weeding when I have to work 52 hours a week and help my sister take care of our father. There's nothing I like better than getting out there and working in the gardens, though.

Karen

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very admirable, Karen. And very impressive with all your responsibilities!

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

Karen, I enjoyed looking at your garden photos. I think it is great that you are continuing your father's garden.
I was very close to my father and we had a yearly contest as to who had the first ripe tomato. It was a great undertaking for me since I lived in NE and he live in IOWA .;) LOL
Nevertheless, our family ties are the strongest and I would love to trade some flowers with you in dedication to our fathers.
I need a couple of days to compile what I can bring to the RU and then I will post it. You have beautiful pics and I would love to share some of those plants.
My father would save flower seeds from everything and then give them to me so nothing would go to waste. I have a lot of flowers he passed onto me. How about bringing a pic of your DAD too? This about family and gardening and I would love to see your DAD. Cyndie

Cyndie & Karen:

You guys have me in tears this morning. How beautiful to dedicate gardens to dads and moms, or to those who gave us the gardening bug. It will be such a special thing to hear stories from both of you, and others, about how we got started with our passion of gardening.

Now I really can't wait for the Round Up.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Victor. Now if only I could clone myself to help with the weeding situation. Actually I would have more time if I didn't have to mow the lawn so much. That's a chore and half, and I don't mind doing it, as it gives me much needed exercise, but it's just time-consuming when so many other things also require me attention.

Thanks for the compliments, Cyndie. That's great hearing about your Dad. I will do better than bring a picture of my Dad, I am bring him with me to the RU, as well as my fellow gardening friend/fanatic, also named Karen. She and my Dad both came with my to Kassia's RU in June of 2007. I missed hers this year, as I was out of touch for about a year, not having renewed my membership to DG. I was depressed last year, but back in the swing of things this year.

Candyce, can't wait for the RU!

Karen

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Karen my friend, you have a lot... I am looking for very pink daylilies... I am stuck on pink... saw one of Victor's and can't get over... I am waiting for the name and I will let you know...

I am not sure what I am bringing... have not finished weeding... if you guys see how bad my garden looks right now I will be expelled from DG... crab grass is a pest... I can't believe how much those pests grow... soooooo bad....

Thomaston, CT

Karen, I would love a few of the tall bearded iris. I wish I had a nice pink daylily that was bright--I do have a pale pink & cream mix if you are interested, Kassia. I thought it was Egyptian Ibis, but Pix says no--so I have no name for it. I love hearing the garden stories--I've planted things just because my Gram did.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Ahhhh but Pix could be wrong...she's been wrong many times before! LOL

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Kassia, don't feel so bad about the weed situation. I have a lot of beds that are chock full of weeds. I just don't have the time to keep up. The front gardens look the best, as I don't want the neighbors to think I don't take care of my gardens. LOL! Little do they know...... Mowing my lawn takes up a good chunk of my time.

Karen

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Hey - we are the only people who know that the green things are weeds. Everyone in my neighborhood think they are supposed to be there and I'm nopt telling them that they are wrong. That would be rude.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Good one, Cat, I'll have to remember that!

Karen

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Cat ~
You are a self-esteem saver!!
Anna has taken this week off from work. She took it for two reasons:
(1) because she wanted to be home when the kiddos went off to school, and
(2) so she could get into the gardens and WEED!!

I haven't been much help because of the extra day-care I have taken on over the summer, and I feel so bad about that. But now, I guess I can feel 'safe' that the neighbors just don't know!

P.S. I'll be sending out another 'Blast' pretty soon.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL! Candyce, I have done the same thing, taken off a week or a long weekend from work just to WEED, and other sundry yard work that needs my attention.

Karen

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Hey there, Candyce! The time is just flying by here and I got a kick out of Anna taking time off to weed! I think I'm on the 9th round of gallant soldiers in my veggie garden, and so far - knock wood - I've managed to keep most of the plants from coming to seed and spewing 10,000 seeds per plant for my weeding enjoyment next summer! Despite my almost daily weeding, here's a shot of the ground that was weed-free only a week ago. Grrrrrrr.

Hope everyone is having a nice Labor Day weekend!! Enjoy!!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Ah!
But what a beautiful week we have ahead of us to do all this weeding and thinning.

Well I'm a new one here, however I won't be able to attend. I'm not exactly sure where you live either since I live in the Monadnock area too. I live right next to Antrim, Francestown and Bennington.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Hi Intrigue3 and welcome!! You are not far from me and from Candyce, so I am sorry you won't make it to the RU this time. Don't worry - we will have other RUs in the area, I suspect, and I hope to meet you at some point!

Hey, has anyone heard from Sarah in Keene recently??? I don't believe I've seen any posts from her for awhile.

DB, where are you? One reason is because we only one have vehicle. It's what hubby takes to work everyday. He works an hour from here.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Intrigue, if you are on my way I will be more than happy to give you a ride... I am coming from Framingham so I will be driving up there anyway... dmail me your address if you want and I will look up on google...

and by the way, Welcome to DG... this is by far the best site ever!!!!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes, welcome to DG, Intrigue3! There are a great bunch of people here! Here's hoping you can come to the RU. Would love to meet you.

Karen

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Hi Intrigue and welcome, you're going to love it here.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Hiya, Intrigue!
Let me add my hellos to everyone else's here on this thread. I know you and I have been d-mailing back and forth, and if I can figure out just how far you are from me, then perhaps Anna or I can come pick you up for the afternoon. I think I'll Mapquest you now.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Heck!
You only about 25 minutes away from where I live. I think I can take the short drive to come and pick you up. Whadya say?

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

That's so sweet. How's about swingin by here on your way. I'd love to come, though it is a LITTLE out of your way. lol Enjoy the visit.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I have 3 Purple Pawprints to give away for postage. First 3 to respond will get them. I needed room for some DL's coming so I dug up one of my clumps....
It is 18-24" tall, blooms here from June 27 until now. It still had a bloom and a bud on it when I dug it up this morning.

BTW..the white stuff on the plant foliage is a new powder we tried to keep the JB away. Worked pretty good but is ugly as sin when photographing the plants.

New thread ...

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Hey, Candice, does this new thread mean we should put all future responses there, or are we still responding to things via this thread?

Pixie, when you say you put that white stuff on your DL's to keep off the JB, do you mean Japanese Beetles? I have never had them go after my DL's, and I have hundreds (DL's that is, maybe not so many of the JB's). Here I have only had a problem with them on roses. When it comes to DL's I have big problems with deer, but not till this year have they been a problem. Next year will be trying a few things to deter them. It's either that or fence in the place.

Karen

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes JBeetles on everything!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Pixie, do you get the red lily beetles on your Asiatics? I get them here really bad. Another thing I have a problem with is saw fly larvae (little caterpillars) on my hibiscus. Really do a number on the foliage, though they don't touch the flowers. The lily beetles eat flower, foliage and all. They don't touch the daylilies, only Asiatics, orientals and other 'true' lilies (whereas daylilies are in a different class altogther).

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes I get the dreaded Red lily beetle and I spray like a mad woman!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I think Celeste sprayed DH Brian a few times!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

But he never had any beetles!
