October Round-Up in south-western New Hampshire

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks, Jo Ann and Nance........we will miss you both!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I have a real JONES to come sometime and will probably make the spring RU if its within reasonable distance.
It will mean two nights in a motel but I will definitly try

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

We'll have a Central NY one sometime! Fingerlakes - many to choose from.

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

I am still coming!!
We found a hotel for under $100 so we will make a weekend of it by driving through NH and VT and back to Maine. I am looking forward to meeting all of you.
I do have a question for anyone coming: Is anyone interested in purple liatris?
I can get MANY new plants of liatris to bring. They are from an area that has reseeded small plants and will eventually be pulled and thrown away. If enough people want them, I will rescue them and bring them with the other plants I am bringing.
Cyndie

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Cyndie - I'm so glad you can come! Yes, I'd like some purple liatris. I lost mine during our construction on the house this year.

Maybe, and what would you like cydnie? Oh I want to meet everyone !

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

Well, There isn't much I don't like, ;-) So my answer is pretty wishy-washy.
But my yard is basically 2 areas, wooded shady moist; and the full sun dry soil that is common in woodland settings. Since our home is fairly new I have spent the last few years trying to plant beds. I succeed in removing a little more grass each year. I guess if I had to say what I would like, it would be plants that fall into the under 2 foot height.
I know it is not very specific, but I have a lot of space to fill and like most gardeners, hate to turn down a good plant. LOL
I am relying on the round-up Dg's to broaden my horizens. LOL
What plants are your favorites that you might be sharing?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Dayliles! LOL

'Purple Paw Print' These multiply quickly, bloom almost all summer.
Mine started blooming the last week in June/first week of July......they are still in bloom now!!
Aprox. 22-26 inches with an extrodinary green throat.

ANY THING PERINNEIAL !! Anyone hear that before??? oh memories.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

LOL Sherrie, sounds a bit familar!

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

Nice DL, Celeste. Sorta the obvious. All of your DL's are gorgeous. Some day you will have to tell me how you got started with that particular plant. From what I have seen, you must have hundreds.
Schickenlady, I love the Ct. River Valley of NH. I knew you were from Nh, but didn't know it was that area. I noticed a lot of us have changed our "location" in our id.

Internet can be scary. If you had your home phone # for a long time type it into the Google search bar and it will tell your name and Street and number.

CT river is about 5 miles from my house. Interstate 91 is an easy access. Downfall - to do something like a mall or something out of the ordinary, I have to travel. If you want to look at trees, mountians, rivers or fields. Take any road. I would rather watch my grass grow.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Funny, Sherrie - I just came in from watching my grass grow! LOL I'm resting after making a blueberry pie and herbing some chicken for our company tomorrow.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Sherrie, when you say you have to travel, like to a mall or something, how far do you mean? Our closest mall is about 15 minutes from me, with no real traffic to speak of. I grew up here in this house where my father lives. I moved away to northern Nevada (Reno and Fallon) for 17 years, then Sacramento, CA for 1 1/2 years, then Phoenix, AZ area for 4 years, before finally moving back here. Reno was a small city surrounded by a lot of rural area. Fallon was very rural. Sacramento is big city, and so is the Phoenix area, though I lived near some excellent places to hike.

After having lived in a couple of cities for awhile, and having everything so close and convenient, it took me awhile to adjust to living in the country again when I moved back here. I'm used to it now and love it, though sometimes I miss the convenience of city life. Maybe not so convenient when you consider the traffic problem. I spent many hours stuck in rush hour traffic going to and from work. Don't miss that at all. Now it takes me only 15 minutes to get to work.

Karen

JC Penny is 1/2 hour drive. The closest mall is 1-1/2 drive in Manchester NH and that mall is just OK. If I wanted to go to a real mall it would be Holyoke in MA that is 1-3/4 drive straight down I-91.

Wally world, K mart, Home depo, and Sears. Market basket and Hannafords other than that you have to go for a ride.

No wonder why I wear Jeans, t-shirts and sneakers.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Yeah Sherrie.
It's much the same for me. Driving to the nearest grocery store to do the weekly shopping is almost a major event, although not quite as for for me as it is for you. Still, it's far enough that I try to make just one major trip a week.

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

The Manchester Mall is not a "real mall"??? As one who HATES shopping, it's MORE than enough mall for me, LOL!! I wish I lived more in the "country", with lots more land and mountain views, but there is also a lot to be said for convenient locations. Fortunately, my neighborhood is very quiet - dead end street, lots of trees, so I get the illusion of "living in the sticks" but the highway is just 2 miles away. UNfortunately, I also live 2 miles from the location where they plan to build the much disputed new outlet malls. That could change everything for me - may even drive me to find a new home although I can't imagine leaving all the work I've done in my yard behind...

I used to live in the city and had a "city life". I miss not being able to do different things all the time. When I lived in FL we would go and see snake, bird shows, zoos, the ocean just all different things. The traffic I dont miss at all. I dont miss having to have a set of eyes in front of me and in the back of me at all times.

I live on a dead end street with hardley any traffic. I have one neighbor above me (that I really dont care for but they are ummm - stop there). I see their house and cant stand it. I would like the house to leave. Cant see the neighbors to the east well or west well. There is no one south so I really like that. I dont miss the city life where your neighbors are right there. Oh well its life and no matter what everyone has to deal with it.

Manchester mall in my eyes is not a real mall. If I am going to blow my time I would go to something bigger and better. I would not mind taking a trip to Foxwoods or Mohegan as I have never been to a gambling place. Those are a 3 hour ride! I would skip shopping for sure!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Sherrie, I have been to Foxwoods, and there is plenty of shopping there along with the gambling. They also have a Hard Rock Cafe, which I love.

I would love to live where my sister is in Texas, just outside of Killeen. She has 20 acres and can only see one neighbor's house. She has a view that goes for miles. I love wide open spaces like that.

Karen

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Songs, we're 20 mins from some outlets and that is far enough away for me. I'd hate to live anywhere near them.
After working in malls for 15 yrs I try to avoid them as much as I can. I had to make a trip there awhile back(our real nice one is about 30mins away) and when we walked out of JCP into the mall my son looks up and goes"WOW, what is this place?" Hee hee too funny.

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

I hear you, Jen. I can't believe the outlets got approved - there was so much negative feedback from the community, and we actually voted it down, but somehow they managed to find a loophole. The location where they plan to build is right off the highway, but for the most part, the area is largely residential. There are a few businesses in the immediate area - but no retail stores so it just doesn't make sense to stick a huge outlet mall here. It stinks!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I can't stand malls but if they are not near other small, mom and pop businesses, their impact on them will hopefully be less.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Why doesn't anyone make a gardening mall? Now THAT would be useful!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

How awesome would that be!!!!!!!!!!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I would definitely go to a gardening mall. Like a perpetual home and garden show, or like going to the New England Flower Show year round. Wouldn't that be great!

Karen

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

There is a garden center here that looks like one already.
Serves snacks at tables, sells garden furniture,Smith Hawken tools, and ohhh I almost forgot plants.
Grossmans greenhouses and gardens Fairport Road, if anyone is interested.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh people I love going to the mall to get Lindt chocolate and to Lane Bryant ... and that's the extent of it... I can't believe I used to like going there...

No gardening mall... please... I would never leave a place like that... are you kidding??? I would have no money left!!!!

lol... can just imagine!!!!

Sherrie and Candyce: you guys have my dream!!!!! to live in the country... ah I dream of that!!!!

Thomaston, CT

A gardening mall--- wow! I usually go Lee, Ma for the outlets--basically Reeboks because I live in sneakers. I plan on taking my FL company there this Fri. Pixie, I would love some Purple Pawprint DL's---I am bringing the double orange Kwanza & a coral & gold noid. I also have purple iris that smell like grapes, & an old yellow ---very tall--that my aunt planted over 50 years ago. I also have a small purple & yellow bi-color iris that spreads into a nice clump--that's Honoria--if anyone wants something, let me know.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL! Kassia, I'm with you, I would never leave a gardening mall, and I'd be broke all the time. Not that I'm not already broke all the time ;-).

Karen

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

anyone has pink daylilies??? I want some to plant next to some David Austin roses... I will have some other daylilies to trade ...

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I thought I would list some of the plants I will be bringing to the RU. I have some great chartreuse foliage lemon balm that is potted. I think I have 3 or 4 pots. Here's a picture of it.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

The lemon balm I have in the pots does not have that intense chartreuse color, as they've been in the shade. They have to be in full sun for best foliage color.

I also have lots of garden phlox that I don't know the name of that I can dig up and bring bare root. I will wrap the roots in damp paper towels. Here's a pic.

I have Husker's Red penstemon, and it has done really well for me. I have about 4 pots of it. Grows tall and is a fast increaser. I love it, and so do the bees and hummingbirds. Here's a close up of the flowers.

I have lots of this blue spider wort (tradescantia). It makes nice big clumps and very pretty. This will be bare root as well.

Here's a close-up of that blue spider wort.

I could bring pieces of this prickly pear cactus, if anyone wants some.

I also have tons of this bell flower. It's a fast spreader, but easy to pull out.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I have lots of this near white daylily called Ice Carnival, if anyone is interested.

I have this dayliliy called Canyon Lands, also, if anyone is interested. Kind of a terra cotta color.

Little of anything Perennial :-) I will take just about anything as I have little of anything :-(

For all of you that are gardeners and those that are becoming gardeners. Here is my story.
