trouble with flowering almond

Cedar Springs, MI

I have a flowering almond that has blossomed for the last three years and then died back. After this, it starts new growth again. Any ideas? Should I transplant it and get a look at the roots? No obvious pests. Other plants around it seem to be fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am uncertain about the zone in which you live, however, perhaps this experience will help to point you in the right direction.

We experienced the same problem with one of our flowering shrubs which is similar to a flowering almond. After doing a soil test we found that after repeated fertilizing for an extended period of time that the soil became too high in nitrogen which is a primary cause of a flowering shrub to die back. When we transplanted using an all-purpose fertilizer it seemed to take care of the problem

Additionally, pruning the shrub to allow for air flow and avoiding fertilization late in the growing season really helped to provide growth consistency.

Thanks JoGreen. We're in zone 5. I hadn't thought about a soil test but that is a good idea. It may even be the opposite problem for me as I have it planted near my lavender--limey soil. Will try transplanting away from the lavender and do a soil test. Appreciate your input.
