Hobbit Tree

Sugar Land, TX

I have a hobbit tree that is getting rather large, and would like to take some of it and maybe make another plant. I was wondering if anybody knew how to do this w/o killing it. Thanks!

Any chance you have a Latin name or a picture so we know what plant you're talking about? I googled hobbit tree and found it used to refer to different plants, it was usually describing big old trees that had a "hobbit hole" sort of feature in the trunk, so it didn't seem to have anything to do with being a particular type of plant.

Sorry about that.

I know you can trim pieces off of those and start them from cuttings, but since I don't have one (or any other sort of Jade plant) and have never done it I hesitate to advise you on how to do it. But I'm sure someone else around here has done it, if not with that particular jade plant then with a different one, but the techniques should be the same.

I have taken regular Jade tree leaves and rooted them with success. I had the "Hobbitt" jade once, a little one but it didn't survive. I'm pretty sure you can propagate it by leaf or woody stem cuttings, both. Cut off a stem, let it callous over a couple of days and pot it up.

Here's the link to Plant Files on the Hobbitt, not a lot of info but some: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/3286/
