Please help to identify this plant. ? invasive plant

Plant found roadside in upstate NY. Worried that it may be an invasive species. Please help to identify.

it reminds me of one of the mulliens but don't know which one offhand. you should post this in the plant id forum.

Good call, TIS. I have grown many verbascum up North. I have never seen one like that. It sure is pretty.

They are not a true perennial in zone 5, returning every spring from last fall's seeds. Mine produced loads of seeds but didn't self-seed until I put a layer of gravel at the surface of the soil. Almost everything self-seeds on a bed of gravel.

But then again, it could be something completely different.
