Plant found roadside in upstate NY. Worried that it may be an invasive species. Please help to identify.

Good call, TIS. I have grown many verbascum up North. I have never seen one like that. It sure is pretty.
They are not a true perennial in zone 5, returning every spring from last fall's seeds. Mine produced loads of seeds but didn't self-seed until I put a layer of gravel at the surface of the soil. Almost everything self-seeds on a bed of gravel.
But then again, it could be something completely different.
