How do you prune a french lilac and still have flowers the next spring?
pruning french Lilacs
You prune right after it finishes blooming. For this year it's probably too late so you'll have to either sacrifice next year's blooms if it's badly in need of pruning, or else wait until next year just after it finishes its bloom and do it then.
Cut out a third of the oldest stems all the way down to the ground every three years immediately after they bloom.
